How do smart meters work?

Introducing a smart meter means no more hassle, no more meter reads and no more estimated bills. And with your in-home display you’ll be able to see exactly how much energy you’re using in pounds and pence. So whenever you pop the kettle on you’ll see an instant increase in your electricity use on screen. It’s the same for gas - turn on your boiler and you’ll see the amount you’re using (and spending) goes up.

The smart meter rollout

At EDF Energy we want to make going smart simple. To help you take the first step towards getting a smart meter, we’re here to answer any questions you may have. As part of the government’s national smart meter rollout every home in England, Scotland and Wales is entitled to get a smart meter installed by 2020. Find out more about how getting smart with your energy will save you time and hassle.

The smart meter system: smart display

Smart meters replace your existing gas and electricity meters. In most instances they’ll be installed in the same location. What’s great about smart meters is that they come with a handy little monitor called the ‘in-home display’. They’re not compulsory, but if you choose to have one you’ll be able to see your usage and spend, as well as explore other features such as daily, weekly or monthly comparisons. It could also help you take simple steps to reduce your energy usage. It’s a good idea to keep the in-home display plugged in, as the battery life is only around four hours, and position it fairly close to the meter itself.
