Pre-examination stage of planning application

 8 July – 30 September 2020

The planning application for a Development Consent Order (DCO) to build Sizewell C was accepted for examination by Planning Inspectorate on 24 June. Everyone now has the opportunity to read the application and register their interest in the proposals with the Planning Inspectorate until the deadline of 30 September 2020.

Environmental Permit Applications

We have applied to the Environment Agency for the three permits it needs to operate a nuclear power station. Permits cover the work and the controls that the Sizewell C project need to put in place for construction, commissioning, operation and decommissioning of the new power station.

Water Discharge Activity (WDA) Permit | Required to allow the discharge of non-radioactive cooling water from the Sizewell C reactor back into the sea.

Combustion Activity (CA) Permit | Required to allow the operation of the diesel generators in the unlikely event the power station experiences a loss of onsite power.

Radioactive Substances Activities (RSA) Permit | Required to allow the discharge of small amounts of radioactivity from the Sizewell C reactor into the air and sea, and disposal of solid radioactive waste generated by the reactor.

The Environment Agency is now running a 12 week public consultation on those applications from 6 July – 2 October 2020.

Sizewell C, a proposed new nuclear power station in Suffolk, has the potential to generate the reliable low carbon electricity the country needs for decades to come. It will also make a lasting positive difference to the economy in the east of England.

The project is being developed by EDF, together with our long-standing partners CGN. Our joint experience of working together on a range of projects, including constructing two EPR reactors at Taishan in China, is bringing direct benefits to Hinkley Point C and will do the same for the Sizewell C project. Additionally, this partnership has plans to develop Bradwell B in Essex.
