We've put new procedures in place for everyone's safety. Our installers will:

  • wear surgical masks whilst they're in your home
  • adhere to strict hygiene measures
  • ask you to stay at a safe distance whilst they install your smart meter. Where appropriate they'll ask you to stay in another room during the install
  • ask if you and the people in your home wear face masks if you're in the same room as them

How to prepare for your smart meter installation

1: Make sure you're in

Someone who is at least 18 years of age must be there during the installation. This takes about an hour for each meter.

2: Get access to your meter

We need to be able to get to your meters easily. Make sure you have the key to access it if it's located in a cupboard or in a locked room.

3: Keep your pets away

Make sure your pets are in another room during the installation so they won't be disturbed.

4: Keeping everyone safe

We recommend you should wear a face-covering during your installation, whilst our installer is in the same room. This helps us keep everyone safe.

What to expect on the day of your smart meter installation

Preparation

  • We'll call you before your appointment to check that it's still safe for our installer to enter your home

  • If you're self isolating we won't be able to carry out your appointment. Please let us know as soon as possible that this is the case.

  • Make sure you and the others in your household have face masks to wear during the appointment. This helps us keep everyone safe.

  • We’ll ask you to check that our installer will be able to easily access your meters. Read below for tips on how to prepare for the installation.

Installation

  • Our installers will wear appropriate PPE throughout your installation.

  • Our installers will maintain a social distance of two metres at all times which may mean you'll have to stay in a different room.

  • Please make sure that you and anyone else in your home are wearing a mask if you're in the same room as our installer.

  • It takes about an hour to install each meter, and your power and gas will each need to be switched off for around 30 minutes. But in some circumstances, it could take longer.

Explanation

  • After installing your smart meter, our installer will get you connected to your new in-home display (IHD). Our installer will give you some useful advice on how to get the best out of your new smart meter and in-home display. We also have helpful guides you can use.

  • All of our installers’ equipment will be sanitised before and after your smart meter installation. If our installers need to enter your property, they'll also use disinfectant wipes to clean down any surfaces before and after touching them.

  • If you need to discuss anything with your installer, this will be done while maintaining a distance of two metres or can be by telephone.
