How to prepare for your smart meter installation
1: Make sure you're in
Someone who is at least 18 years of age must be there during the installation. This takes about an hour for each meter.
2: Get access to your meter
We need to be able to get to your meters easily. Make sure you have the key to access it if it's located in a cupboard or in a locked room.
3: Keep your pets away
Make sure your pets are in another room during the installation so they won't be disturbed.
What to expect on the day of your smart meter installation
We'll call you before your appointment to check that it's still safe for our installer to enter your home as well as to remind you about social distancing guidelines.
We’ll ask you to check that our installer will be able to easily access your meters. Read below for tips on how to prepare for the installation.
We’ll also ask you to ventilate any rooms and open the doors that lie between your meter and your front door at least 30 minutes before your appointment and to leave open any internal doors that we may have to walk through. That way we won’t have to touch anything.
Our installers will wear appropriate PPE throughout your installation.
Our installers will maintain a social distance of two metres at all times which may mean you'll have to stay in a different room.
It takes about an hour to install each meter, and your power and gas will each need to be switched off for around 30 minutes.
After installing your smart meter, our installer will get you connected to your new in-home display (IHD). Instead of giving you a demonstration, in keeping with social guidelines, we’ll leave you a leaflet on how to use the equipment along with information on energy efficiency advice.
All of our installers’ equipment will be sanitised before and after your smart meter installation. If our installers need to enter your property, they'll also use disinfectant wipes to clean down any surfaces before and after touching them.
If you need to discuss anything with your installer, this will be done while maintaining a distance of two metres or can be by telephone.
