i View of the cooling water pipes gallery. Here, blinding concrete work is being carried out by Kier Bam JV in preparation for handover of the area. Blinding concrete provides a foundation on which the reinforcement can be laid.
i Vertical face trimming in Unit 2 Outfall Building at -9.5m below sea level. The rock face is being prepared by excavator ready for sprayed concrete lining and nailing (which helps to stabilise the walls).
i The world’s strongest crane in its class is completed in the Balfour Beatty compound for the installation of the first Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). Sitting 72m high and capable of lifting 330 tonnes at a 15m radius, the crane will lift components of the TBMs into place.
i Unveiling of the names of the 1,200 tonne Tunnel Boring Machines that will begin the construction of the new power stations’ water inlet and outfall tunnels. This was a unique competition that gave 215 primary schools from across Somerset the opportunity to name the machines.
