GoElectric EV tariffs for your car and home

Following the recent government announcement relating to the energy price cap from October, we've repriced some of our GoElectric tariffs, which take effect from 1st October 2022.

If you're on a GoElectric tariff, please view our new prices.

This means that until further notice we're unable to offer a quote to any new customers wishing to join our GoElectric tariff.

If you'd like us to alert you when we do have an EV tariff available again if you sign up for EV Tariff Alerts.

Already on GoElectric single-rate and want to get GoElectric 35 or GoElectric 98? Head to our tariff tool.

Your EV smart meter questions answered

Do I need to have a smart meter?

You don't need to have a smart meter to sign up to our single-rate GoElectric EV tariff. You do need to have a smart meter to sign up to one of our EV tariffs with off-peak rates: GoElectric 35 and GoElectric 98.

Your smart meter tells how much electricity you're using during peak and off-peak hours, which is how we work out what your bill should be.

If you're an existing EDF customer you can book a smart meter appointment through MyAccount.

How can I tell which meter I have?

What happens if I don't have a compatible smart meter?

If you don't have a compatible smart meter that we can connect to, we'll sign you up to our GoElectric single-rate tariff. Once you have a smart meter you can switch to a GoElectric tariff with off-peak rates: GoElectric 35 and GoElectric 98.

How long will it take for me to get a smart meter installed?

It takes 2 to 4 weeks to get a smart meter once you've signed up to one of our GoElectric tariffs. Occasionally this may take a little longer, depending on where you live.

If you're an existing EDF customer you can book a smart meter appointment through MyAccount.

Your GoElectric EV tariff questions answered

How much do the GoElectric tariffs cost?

The GoElectric tariff has three structures which are;

GoElectric structureGoElectric structure detail
GoElectric flat-rateSame unit price all day, every day
GoElectric 98Off-peak rates apply between 9 pm and 7 am GMT Mondy to Friday plus all weekend
GoElectric 35Off-peak hours (between 12 am and 5 am GMT) every day.

Once you've signed up to our GoElectric tariff, you lock in your prices across all three structures that are in effect on the day you sign up. This means that even if we launch new versions of this tariff with different prices you're still able to access the prices that you were shown when you got a quote from us.

You can move freely between the tariff structures, during your GoElectric tariff deal date without incurring any additional fees. This will help you find out the best one that works for you.

To find out the rates for each of the structures in your area you can use our online quote tool.

I'm already on the GoElectric flat-rate tariff, how do I move to GoElectric 35 or GoElectric 98?

The GoElectric tariff has three structures: Flat-rate, GoElectric 98, and GoElectric 35.

Once you’ve signed up to GoElectric, you lock in the prices across all 3 structures that are in effect on the day you sign up. This means that even if newer versions of GoElectric are launched which have different prices, this will not affect you. You can move between the structures freely for the duration of your tariff whilst keeping the same end date, and you won’t incur any fees.

You’ll need to be an existing EDF customer with a compatible smart meter. If you’re new to EDF and already have a smart meter, we will let you know once your meter has connected to our systems. If you haven’t got a smart meter we will invite you to book a smart meter appointment.

Once you’re ready to change structures, simply follow these steps:

  1. Go to the EDF GoElectric Quote Page and click the ‘Yes’ button when asked ‘Are you on an electric vehicle tariff with us already’. You will then see the option for changing the structure.
  2. View the structures available, choose which one is best for you and submit your request to change the structure. We’ll then update your meter remotely to the new structure.

How do I get a quote for GoElectric 35 or GoElectric 98 with off-peak rates?

In order to generate a quote for these tariffs, you need to be an existing EDF customer with a compatible smart meter. If you do not have a smart meter please log in to MyAccount and book a smart meter appointment.

Once you have a compatible smart meter you will be able to view quotes for both GoElectric 35 and 98 using our quoting tool at EDF GoElectric Quote.

However, the unit rates for these tariffs can be found on our Electric Car Tariff Page.

How much will it cost to fully charge my electric vehicle?

Charging costs depend on the type of electric car you have and the energy tariff you're on.

For example, it could cost you as little as £1.58 to fully charge your electric car during off-peak hours if:

  • you're on our GoElectric 35 tariff with cheaper overnight electricity between 12am and 5am (GMT) daily
  • you have a Nissan Leaf with a 40kW battery
  • That's less than £5 to charge your EV overnight.

Can I also have my gas supply on GoElectric?

Yes, our GoElectric EV tariffs are dual fuel only, this means they’ll cover both your gas and electricity (except where there is no mains gas supply).

What is the Energy Price Guarantee?

The Energy Price Guarantee is a government scheme to ensure that a typical household energy bill does not exceed £2500 per year. A “typical household” is classed as one using 2,900kWh per year of electricity and 12,000kWh per year of gas. The Energy Price Guarantee is not a limit on your maximum bill. Households that use more energy will pay more than £2,500, and households that use less, will pay less.

The Energy Price Guarantee is effectively a discount on kWh unit prices, that will be applied to the October 2022 Ofgem Price Cap pricing (which is still being updated every 3 months to reflect wholesale costs) to lower the unit prices down to the level of the Energy Price Guarantee unit prices. The guarantee is expected to run for two years.

How does the Energy Price Guarantee work?

The Energy Price Guarantee kWh unit prices are set far below the cost of the electricity and gas that we have to buy on the wholesale markets, so the government are providing funding to energy retailers like us to cover the difference between the Ofgem price cap (which is still being updated every 3 months to reflect changes in wholesale prices) and the Energy Price Guarantee unit prices for electricity and gas.

What does this mean for customers who didn’t renew their GoElectric tariff and are now on the Standard (Variable) tariff?

You don’t need to do anything, we will be automatically adjusting our Standard (Variable) tariff prices to match the Energy Price Guarantee rates from 1st October. You don’t need to contact us to request this.

If you were previously on GoElectric 98 then (unless you asked us to change this) you’ll still receive peak and off-peak rates, but they will be charged in line with the Energy Price Guarantee “Eco2020” prices shown in our pricing table. The off-peak hours will remain as 9pm-7am GMT and all weekend.

If you were previously on GoElectric 35 then (unless you asked us to change this) you will still receive peak and off-peak rates, but they will be charged in line with the Energy Price Guarantee “E5” prices shown in our pricing table. The off-peak hours will remain as 12am-5am GMT.

What are the unit prices for Standard (Variable) customers under the Energy Price Guarantee?

Please see the document below for the prices that will apply to electric vehicle customers who are covered by the Energy Price Guarantee. The table shows single-rate as well as customers who have peak/off-peak pricing.

What does this mean for customers who are still on a fixed tariff like GoElectric?

The details of how this will impact fixed tariffs are quite complicated and we’re working hard to calculate exactly how this will impact each of our GoElectric tariffs as quickly as we can. We will be in touch with all impacted customers shortly.

What we can say now is that discounts will be applied to any fixed tariffs that are currently priced above the level of the Energy Price Guarantee for a typical customer. This discount will be up to the level of discount given to non-fixed tariff customers, but it will not aim to make the fixed tariff cheaper than the Energy Price Guarantee.

In a nutshell, if your GoElectric tariff is only a small amount more expensive than the Energy Price Guarantee rates, then the government will fund a small discount. If it’s much more expensive then the discount will be larger, up to the level given to customers on our Standard (Variable) tariff, but it won’t be more than that. We will be in contact with customers on fixed tariffs who we feel may be better off switching to the Standard (Variable) tariff even after the discount has been applied. We aim to contact these customers by 1st October.

Doesn’t this mean that some GoElectric tariffs may end up remaining more expensive than the Energy Price Guarantee?

Yes, some tariffs may remain more expensive, but in this case we will be contacting you with details of how you can exit your tariff without paying any exit fees, and switching to the Energy Price Guarantee rates.

For electric vehicle owners it’s possible that even where a tariff is technically more expensive, your own charging patterns and usage may mean that it’s cheaper for you to remain on the GoElectric tariff.

As soon as we’ve worked out what the new tariff rates will be we’ll be contacting you with all the information you need. We aim to contact all customers in this scenario by the 1st October.

Should I leave my GoElectric tariff now?

We wouldn’t recommend this, it’s possible that your GoElectric tariff may already be cheaper than the Energy Price Guarantee, so leaving would cost you more.

Likewise, many customers who are priced above the Energy Price Guarantee will automatically have their rates lowered to the same level, so they won’t need to do anything.

For those customers on versions that end up being more expensive, we’ll be in touch shortly to tell you how you can leave the tariff if you wish, and we’ll ensure that the exit is done with effect from 1st October 2022 when the Energy Price Guarantee takes effect. We am to contact all customers in this scenario by 1st October 2022.
