This is the car for you if… you want a family-sized electric car but at compact-sized car prices.
Best value, ‘affordable’ and ‘reasonable’ are words you hear a lot in relation to the MG ZS EV. And it’s easy to see why.
This small family SUV is almost ridiculously good value. It has a WLTP range of 163 miles and the type of assisted driving technology you’d find on more expensive models.
Similar in size to the Kia e-Niro, it’s ideal for fledgling families. There’s 470-litre boot space – more than ample for buggies, dogs and anything else you need to pack in the back. Plus, a panoramic glass roof to add to the feeling of space inside the vehicle.
It’s a stylish-looking car with a large grille at the front, recessed headlights and roof bars. There are also some nice design touches. Lift up the MG emblem, for instance, to find the charging point. It's also extremely practical to base this at the front of the car, as you don’t have to worry about parking on the wrong side of the charging point.
Because of its neat size, the MG ZS EV is nippy to drive around town. Yet having the batteries under the floor keeps its centre of gravity low. So it handles corners smoothly and doesn’t deviate from the road. It accelerates from zero to 62mph in a respectable 8.5 seconds too.
For such a well-priced car, it comes with lots of features to enhance your drive. Like three driving modes (Eco, Normal and Sport – although use the last one wisely if you want to conserve your battery life). And different regenerative braking options.
Plus it’s packed with driver assistance technology – known as the MG Pilot suite – to make your journey safer. So there’s active emergency braking in the event of a collision. Lane keep assist to make sure you stay in your lane. And even blind spot detection for when you’re overtaking. Not to mention a whole host of other familiar features, like adaptive cruise control and speed limit warnings.
Inside, the MG ZS EV feels well-proportioned and comfortable. There’s an in-house infotainment system displayed on an 8-inch touchscreen and a DAB radio. Connectivity also comes through Bluetooth, Android Auto or Apple CarPlay.
The MG ZS EV takes just under 7 hours to fully recharge on a typical home charger. But with a WLTP range of 163 miles, you’ll be able to do plenty of journeys around town before you need to reboot. Which is just one more reason why anyone looking for a decent-priced, all-electric SUV should consider the MG ZS EV.
Our three favourite MG ZS EV features:
- The charging point located under the MG emblem on the front grille. It’s a small design touch – but one which indicates the level of thought that’s gone into this electric car.
- The classic shape of the MG ZS EV – not to mention its many practical features – will ensure it appeals to SUV fans.
- Yet for one of the smaller SUV, it feels surprisingly spacious inside, with plenty of room in the back for two child car seats.
You’ll like the MG ZS EV if you… want a good-looking and affordable family SUV, powered by electricity.
