We're investing in low-carbon energy
Renewable energy
The UK needs new, affordable low-carbon electricity to replace old polluting power plants. And here at EDF we're serious about renewables.
We own 36 wind farms – including two off-shore and and one of the largest operational battery storage units in Europe, a technology which is making renewables a more stable part of the energy mix.
Over the next five years we'll be investing billions of pounds with British businesses to generate wind, nuclear and solar electricity.
Nuclear power
Nuclear energy is low-carbon, reliable and works whatever the weather. Around 20% of the UK's electricity is generated by our eight nuclear power stations.
We've invested £1.6 billion with businesses in the South West to support the construction of our 9th nuclear power station Hinkley Point C in Somerset. We're also proposing to build a tenth power station at Sizewell C in Suffolk.
We'll carry on investing in nuclear to make sure we can power the nation with low-carbon electricity for many years to come.
We're investing in technology to help us lead low-carbon lifestyles
Electric revolution
We've believed that electric cars are the future for more than 20 years. We installed the first charging points in London in 1999 and we powered the electric car charging network across the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games sites.
Our ambition is to be the market leader in electric cars and infrastructure by early 2020s. Driving electric could reduce Britain’s carbon footprint by 10%(2).
In February we brought Pod Point into the EDF family, one of the largest electric vehicle (EV) charging companies in the UK. Pod Point offers chargers for home and business, and access to over 3,000 charging bays across the UK.
Energy innovation
Innovation, research and development is key in helping us develop new technology that supports cleaner, low-carbon living.
We collaborate with start-ups, universities and consumers to shape ideas into a reality. We do this by offering access to industry expertise, customer insight, mentoring and coaching.
Our innovations range from smart home solutions that help care for loved ones to products that use smart data to help us become more energy efficient.
How you can get involved
Energy efficiency for businesses
Each business is very different when it comes to energy consumption. We have a number of initiatives, guides and tips that should help each type of small and medium business become more energy efficient.
Take control of your energy
Smart meters are being installed by every energy supplier as a part of a national upgrade to the UK's energy system.
With a smart meter you'll get a better understanding of where your energy goes and join our nationwide mission to build a low-carbon future.
