Unlike many other electricity suppliers, we not only sell zero carbon electricity but actually generate it! In fact, we generate 18.4% of the UK's energy supply! Yes! It's really worth switching your electricity and gas supplier or, at least, having a look at the market on a regular basis. When comparing energy prices, it's good to check:

  • Does the new tariff have exit fees?
  • Does your current tariff have exit fees?
  • Is the energy low-carbon or renewable?
  • Is the customer service reliable?
  • Can you look after your energy account online?
  • And, read everything you need to know from understanding different tariffs to information you'll need when getting an energy quote in our handy compare energy suppliers guide!

The length of time your switch takes depends if you switch after, or within your 14-day cooling off period.

There can be a few reasons, and you might want to get in touch with your current supplier to know exactly why you can't switch right now. Most commonly the reason for a switch being prevented is that energy suppliers can legally stop you from switching to another supplier if you owe them money, or have been in debt to them for more than 28 days.

If you have a debt and a credit meter you may be able to switch if:

  • Your supplier hasn't sent you a bill
  • You got your bill from your supplier less than 28 days ago

If your energy supplier sent you a bill over 28 days ago, they'll probably reject your switch. You'll most likely need to pay off any money you owe them first, before trying to switch again.

If you have a prepayment meter and a debt of less than £500, you'll most likely be able to switch - but do get in touch with your supplier to check. You won't be able to switch until your debt is under £500.

If you have a prepayment meter and a debt of less than £500, you'll most likely be able to switch - but do get in touch with your supplier to check. You won't be able to switch until your debt is under £500.

With a fixed-price tariff, you pay a set unit price over the lifetime of your gas and electric contract. It can help with budgeting as the unit price doesn't change when energy prices go up, and therefore give peace of mind. But, it depends on lots of different factors, such as how you use energy in your home, how you pay for your energy and how you heat your home. Learn more about fixed energy tariffs or find out if a fixed tariff is right for you. You may also find it handy to better understand how energy prices are likely to change in the near future, to help you decide whether you want to fix your energy tariff.

Tracker tariffs give you flexible prices that follow the market, with capped trackers that always stay below Ofgem’s price cap. They sit between fixed and standard variable tariffs. Your prices go up or down over time, but you benefit when market rates or the price cap rates fall.

If you're a tenant who is responsible for directly paying for your energy bill, you have the right to switch energy supplier.

Yes, you can switch switch energy suppliers when you have solar panels — but you must switch to an eligible supplier.

Yes, you can switch energy suppliers if you have a heat pump — it's a good idea to find a tariff designed specifically for homes with a heat pump

Yes, you can switch energy supplier when moving home

There's a few things you'll need to do:

  • Tell your energy supplier you're moving - try to give at least 48 hours’ notice
  • Read your meters on the day you move out and give the readings to your supplier - keep a note of the readings and the dates you took them, in case you don't agree with your final bill
  • Give your supplier a forwarding address so they can send you the final bill - you’ll have 28 days to pay

Once you've moved

  • Get in touch with your current supplier at your new home and let them know you've moved
  • Read your meters on the day you move in and give the readings to the current supplier.
  • You’ll need to pay your final bill to your old supplier - they should send it to you within six weeks

If you want to cancel your switch to us, you should let us know straight away.

What happens next depends on whether we've started supplying you with energy or not.

If we haven't yet started supplying you with energy – and you're still within your 14-day cooling off period

Just sit back and relax – you don't need to do anything! You'll stay with your current supplier, and we'll take care of the cancellation for you. We'll be back in touch to let you know when it's done.

If we've already started supplying you with energy and you’re still within your 14-day cooling off period

You can choose from:

1. Stay with EDF and upgrade your energy plan - if you want to do this, simply call us on 0333 006 99 50(7). Customers with hearing difficulties can use their text telephone and message us on 0800 096 29 29.

2. Go back to your previous energy supplier - please get in touch with your previous supplier, if you’d like to switch back to them. Make sure to go back on equivalent terms and conditions

3. Choose a new energy supplier - please choose a new tariff with another supplier. You’ll have a new energy tariff, contract, and terms and conditions.

We'll also write to you to let you know about these options. While you decide what to do, you'll stay on the tariff you chose when you joined EDF and you'll need to cover the cost of any energy you use during your time with us.

You have 15 working days to make a decision from when we have sent you information about your cancellation. If you don't pick one of these three options or we don't hear from you within this time, you'll stay with EDF and move on to our deemed tariff. This means your energy prices can go up or down. You can check what our deemed prices are in the letter we send you outlining your choices.

No, you don't. We do this! But we will need your meter readings. We'll be in touch with your old supplier to make sure they send you an accurate final bill.
