Why are we rewarding flexibility?

The energy system is under greater pressure at certain times of the day. When customers can reduce electricity use during these busy periods, it helps create a more flexible energy system.

Small changes to our daily habits can make a big difference to our carbon impact. By being mindful of our daily tasks, we can make positive changes to help create a greener, more sustainable grid. Weekend Saver is our way of giving something back to customers who can help.

Earn more by using less at peak times

Use less electricity between 4 pm and 7 pm on weekdays, and you could earn up to 25 hours of free electricity. The more you reduce your electricity use during these busy times, the more free hours you'll earn. Customers with the lowest peak-time usage earn the most rewards.

Infographic explaining how free electricity hours are earned by reducing electricity use between 4pm and 7pm on weekdays. Peak-time electricity use below 9% earns 25 free hours, 9% to less than 12% earns 15 free hours, 12% to less than 15% earns 10 free hours, 15% to less than 18% earns 5 free hours, and 18% or more earns no free hours.

Get a shift on! Tips to shift your electricity usage

The way we use electricity can help create a greener, more sustainable energy system. By shifting some of your electricity use away from the busiest times of day, you're helping reduce pressure on the grid when demand is highest.

Looking for easy ways to get started? Here are a few simple changes you can make during weekday peak times (between 4pm to 7pm):

  • Run your dishwasher outside peak hours. Set it to run after 7 pm, making sure the cycle finishes before bedtime. Or pop it on after breakfast. Either way, wait until it's full before you start it. Running your dishwasher outside the peak period around six times each month, means you can start earning free electricity
  • Give devices a break. Between 4 pm and 7 pm, unplug phones, tablets and chargers where you can. Remember, many devices still use electricity when left on standby
  • Swap screen time for family time. Take a break from gaming consoles and try a family activity instead. You could play a board game, get creative, or spend time outdoorsCheck out some ideas
  • Cook once, enjoy twice. Batch cooking at the weekend can save both time and energy during the week. Simply reheat your meals when you need them
  • Save the washing for later. Try not to use your washing machine or tumble dryer during peak hours. If the weather allows, hanging clothes outside can help save even more energy

Every small switch adds up. Together, these simple changes can make a real difference.

How Weekend Saver works

Everyone has the same target. Your challenge is to keep your electricity use between 4pm–7pm, Monday to Friday, below 9% of your monthly electricity use. The more you shift outside these hours, the more free hours you can earn.

We use your smart meter readings to understand your typical electricity use and set your personalised challenge baseline. Shift your peak-time electricity use below 9%, and you'll earn 25 free hours of electricity to use the following month.

We compare the electricity you use during weekday peak hours with your total monthly electricity use. Electricity used on weekends, bank holidays and Free Energy Event days isn't included.

Try moving jobs like washing, drying or running the dishwasher outside 4pm–7pm on weekdays. Even small changes can help you earn more free hours. Use 'My Breakdown' in Energy Hub to see where you are using the most electricity.

How Weekend Saver rewards customers

Use the table below to see how much you can earn.

between 9% and 12%15 hours
between 12% and 15%10 hours
between 15% and 18%5 hours
18% and over0 hours

We'll automatically credit your account within 5 working days of the end of the month, once you've used your free hours.

Your smart meter shows us how much electricity you use during your chosen free hours. We'll then credit the value of that electricity back to you as a reward at the end of the month.

When you join Flextras, you'll get 4 Free Bonus Hours if your smart meter sends half-hourly readings. If you didn't receive them when you joined Flextras, you'll get them the first time you join Weekend Saver instead. Depending on when you join, you can use them straight away or the following month.

Don't worry. As long as you're still eligible, you can try again in the next challenge month.

There's no set limit. Just use electricity safely and avoid overloading sockets, extension leads or circuits.

Using your free hours

Once you've earned free hours, head to Energy Hub in the app and choose the days and times that suit you. You can update your choices until the Thursday before your selected weekend and plan them weekly or for the whole month.

Don’t worry, you’ll still get your free hours. If you don’t choose a time by 11:59pm Thursday before the final eligible weekend, we’ll automatically schedule them. We’ll allocate up to 5 hours Sat 8am–1pm, then Sun 8am–1pm, followed by Sat 12am–8am and Sun 12am–8am. Check your hours in the app.

Yes. You can change your chosen free hours up until 11.59 pm on the Thursday before the weekend you would like to use them.

Your account & carbon savings

Our carbon-saving data is supported by National Grid ESO open data. We calculate your carbon savings based on the equivalent of boiling 1 litre of water in an electric kettle (0.11kWh), using the average carbon intensity between 4pm–7pm Monday to Friday in 2023. Carbon intensity shows how clean electricity is.

You'll need to sign up again at your new address. Any earned rewards will still be credited to you.

You'll still receive credit for any free hours you've already used. If there's any reward still owed after your account closes, we'll arrange to pay it to you. You won't be able to use any remaining free hours after you switch.
