Fixed vs variable energy tariffs

Energy tariffs are a plan of how you'll get charged for your gas and electricity usage. We offer two main types of energy tariffs: fixed and variable rate.

Fixed-price tariffs

With fixed-priced energy tariffs, or plans, you pay a set unit price over the lifetime of your contract with us. This helps with budgeting and gives peace of mind as the energy unit price doesn't change when energy prices increase, saving you some money when our standard prices increase.

Variable tariffs

A variable energy tariff, or plan, means the unit cost of energy can change at any time (often every three months), provided they remain less than or equal to Ofgem's price cap. This is good if you're happy to pay a different amount each month and prefer not to be on a fixed tariff contract.

What is Ofgem's price cap?

Ofgem (the energy industry's watch dog) set the maximum amount (a cap) energy suppliers can charge you for each unit of energy and standing charge if you're on a standard variable tariff. It gets reviewed every three months, which means variable tariffs can go up and down, depending on whether the price cap goes up or down.

The Simply Tracker Extra Jun27 tariff will be priced at the same level as our Standard (Variable) tariff. Prices will change every three months in-line with the energy price cap. With Simply Tracker Extra Jun27, we guarantee to reduce the standing charge by applying a daily discount of 13.70p (inc VAT) for both electricity and gas. Over a year that's £50.01 off the electricity standing charge and £50.01 off the gas standing charge. A total of £100.02. This isn’t a one‑off payment – and because standing charges apply every day, your discount is guaranteed for the duration of the tariff.
Standing charges are the fixed daily charges that cover the cost of supplying energy to your home. They can rise or fall with the price cap, and they apply even if you don’t use any energy.

The discounted standing charge applied is the same across all regions and payment methods. Customers on traditional (non-smart) prepayment meters will need to move to smart Pay-As-You-Go to get this tariff. The discounted standing charge applies no matter how much energy you use.

'Typical' yearly consumption is 2,700kWh electricity and 11,500kWh gas based on a national average of regional prices for a dual fuel customer with a standard electricity meter who pays by Direct Debit. This tariff is backed yearly by 100% zero carbon nuclear electricity as standard. The UK fuel mix disclosure information published by the government (DESNZ) recognises electricity generated from wind, solar and nuclear produces zero carbon dioxide emissions at the point of generation. The average saving of more than £800 per year compared to the price cap assumes Ofgem typical consumption, payment by Direct Debit and national average tariff rates. A typical household (of 2-3 people and with 10-12 panels) on Standard Variable Tariff (2,700 kWh consumption with Standard electricity meter) would pay £947 per year for electricity based on January 2026 energy price cap rates. A typical household (of 2-3 people and with 10-12 panels) with 2,700 kWh of solar generation and a battery with a capacity of 3kWh will pay £0 over a year, based on January 2026 (Import and Export) Empower Tracker Exclusive 12m v2 & Export Exclusive 12m v2 tariff rates. Assumes that solar generation is prioritised to power the home with excess stored in the battery. Battery discharge is prioritised for use in peak hours. The battery is topped up using imported energy in night/off-peak hours and discharged during the peak. Excess energy not used for the home/ when the battery is full is exported.
This rate applies exclusively to our Export Exclusive 12m V2 export tariff. Rates for other SEG tariffs will vary.
