EDF celebrates World EV Day with £50 cashback offer

Posted September 09, 2025

EDF is giving £50 cashback to customers who sign-up to its GoElectric tariff in celebration of World EV Day[i]. The limited time offer will deliver the equivalent of 1,944 miles of home charging – enough to cover 374 school runs for free, just in time for back to school[ii].

This offer comes as sales of electric vehicles hit their highest monthly share of car sales[iii] in August, with sales of EVs expected to rise even further thanks to September's biannual number plate change and the Government’s renewed electric car grant.

EDF’s GoElectric tariff is designed to make the switch to EV easier and more affordable.  It carries £316[iv] in savings compared to a standard variable rate, delivering cheaper electricity rates overnight at just 9p/kWh for both the drivers’ home energy and vehicle charging.

The tariff is compatible with all EV models and chargers and includes five hours of cheaper electricity every night between 12am – 5am, backed by 100% zero carbon electricity[v].

Customers can combine their tariff with EDF’s Smart Charging bolt-on unlocking a further £251 of savings[vi]. By allowing EDF to automatically charge their EV when electricity is cheapest and greenest, customers get access to more off-peak electricity rates for their home and car outside the standard off-peak window (12am – 5am).

August was the highest monthly share of EV adoption this year,” said Rich Hughes, Director of Retail at EDF. “As we head into September, we know many drivers are considering making the switch, and this offer is designed to help them do just that – putting £50 back in their pockets and giving them access to one of the most cost-effective ways to charge at home. It’s about making cleaner transport more accessible, affordable, and rewarding.”

To be eligible for the £50 credit, new or existing customers must switch to the GoElectric tariff before 21st September 2025[vii]. The credit will be applied to their account within 60 days of signing up. Customers must have a smart meter and be opted into half-hourly meter readings.

EDF is also offering customers the chance to win free energy for a year through a limited-time prize draw, where four winners will be selected at random between September and December 2025. Households can enter the competition here: edfenergy.com/win

[i] £50 account credit is equivalent to up to1,944 miles of home charging, based on an EV achieving3.5 miles per kWhand charging during the9p/kWh off-peak rate (midnight to 5am)on the EDF GoElectric tariff (price correct as of 01 September 2025).

[ii] Based on current off-peak electricity rates of 9p per kilowatt-hour and an average electric vehicle efficiency of 3.5 miles per kWh, a £50 energy credit could power an EV for approximately 1,944 miles. For families using their EV for the school run - typically a 5.2-mile round trip - this equates to around 374 school journeys. This estimate is based on off-peak electricity pricing and average EV efficiency. Actual mileage may vary depending on vehicle model, driving conditions, and electricity tariffs.

[iii] According to data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, 26.5% of all new car registrations in August were battery electric vehicles (BEVs) - the highest monthly share this year. This is a 24% increase in EV market share compared to July, showing strong month-on-month growth.

[iv] GoElectric £316 saving: compares EDF’s GoElectric Sep26tariff cost at £1,905 a year based on a dual fuel customer using total electricity consumption of 4,650 kWh (2,700kWh peak rates and 1,950 kWh off-peak rates) and Ofgem typical gas consumption of 11,500 kWh. This is compared to a dual fuel Standard Variable customer (Electricity Standard meter adjusted for equivalent electricity use) which will cost £2,221 a year based on July 2025 energy price cap rates. This assumes your car is charged during off-peak hours at the GoElectric off-peak rate. We use a national average of Direct Debit regional prices and actual savings may apply depending on usage and charging patterns.

[vi] Customers set the schedule and keep their EV plugged in when they’re not using it. EDF will charge it automatically when electricity is at its cheapest. Customers will always pay their off-peak rates when their EV charges, no matter what time of the day it is. If their EV is charging, they’ll be charged the off-peak rates for electricity in their home too. To get up to the £251 Smart Charging bolt-on saving, annual savings assume 3,150kWh charging off-peak and a £5/month credit. Smart Charging offers an extra 1,200 kWh of off-peak charging. The total off-peak charging is 3,150 kWh with EDF's GoElectric tariff with Smart Charging (GoElectric's off-peak rates at 1,950 kWh).
