How Smart Charging works

1. Compatibility

Check your car and charger are compatible. We're always adding more vehicles and chargers. If you can't see yours today, check back soon.

2. Choose a tariff

Choose GoElectric or one of our single-rate electricity plans. Pick the tariff that works best for you and get ready to start smart charging.

3. Get set up

Choose when you want your car ready, plug in and leave the rest to us. To get started, connect your car or charger while you're at home. If you've already set up charging schedules, switch them off first.

4. Smart charging

We'll charge your car when electricity costs less. Our smart charging technology automatically charges your EV at cheaper times. Need extra power sooner? Use Boost Charge whenever you need a quicker top-up.

5. Whole-home savings

Your home gets the cheaper rate, too. While your car is charging, you'll also get a lower rate on the electricity you use at home.

6. Rewards

Track your rewards in the app. See your savings and keep up to date with your rewards, all in one place.

Why choose Smart Charging

  • Always get off-peak, cheaper rates when we charge your car
  • Sign up to our GoElectric tariff with Britain’s lowest night rates + longer off-peak hours(2)
  • Get an extra £60 off your bill annually, just as a thank you for plugging in!(1)

Smart Charging FAQs

Daily charging and control

No, our Smart Charging bolt-on is available to any customers on a single rate tariff too. If you're looking for an EV tariff,  explore our EV tariff options today to see if there are more savings you could benefit from while enjoying all the benefits of smarter charging!

We will send a charging signal directly to your electric vehicle to turn it on or off. This signal will take account of your charging settings and charge the EV at the most economical times for the National Grid (lowest wholesale electricity cost). This information also shows in your EDF app.

No worries! Just plug in and use the boost charge functionality to charge your EV. This is for emergencies only, as it won't allow you to charge when it's cheapest and best for the carbon impact. It could also cost you more if you use this functionality during peak times. You can also boost charge from your EDF app!

As much as you like! Initially, you'll be set up using our default settings. These timings will charge your EV to 80% by 8am daily. If you want to change these, you can do so. Your new settings will stay the same until you decide to change them. If you need to adjust your battery limit, such as charging to 100%, you can easily do this by adjusting your charging schedule using the EDF app or online in MyAccount.

If you’re already on our GoElectric or a single rate tariff, you can opt into Smart Charging anytime.

  • Just log in using the EDF app or online in MyAccount
  • Head to your electric vehicle section
  • Toggle to "Enable Smart Charging," and reconnect your EV or charger
  • Accept the latest terms, and you’re good to go!

Once completed, Smart Charging will be active again, and you’ll start receiving the £5/month credit and access to whole-home off-peak pricing during scheduled charges.

Yes, you need to be at home for smart charging to work. Your EV needs to be connected to the charger so we can optimise the charging process.  This will not affect your charging at other locations.

Currently, Smart Charging can only support one electric vehicle per account. But we are working on expanding to more than one EV in the future!

Depending on your electric vehicle and home charger, you may be able to Smart Charge through your EV or your charger, or sometimes both – in this situation, you may be asked to choose which option you’d like to use.

Connecting to Smart Charging through your EV:

As your car shares its battery level with us, we automatically adjust charging to meet your preferences and the schedule you set, while making sure your charging happens at cheapest, off-peak times. We always know how much charge your EV needs, which means connecting to Smart Charging through your EV is a mostly “hands-off” experience for you.

Connecting to Smart Charging through your charger:

This is a bit more hands-on. Since your EV charger doesn’t share your battery level, we can’t see how full your EV is.

  1. You set the amount of charge you want to add each time you plug in.
  2. The same daily top-up is applied each time you plug-in to charge, unless you update and change the amount.
  3. If you want the system to automatically repeat the new charge amount, you’ll need to unplug and reconnect your EV.

If you’re moving home, just let EDF know your moving date and set up your new electricity supply with us at your new address.

Once your new supply is active, you will need to disconnect your EV and charger in MyAccount and sign back up to the Smart Charging bolt-on when your EV is plugged in at your new address.

Yes. If your EV requires a connectivity or app subscription from the manufacturer, it must be active so we can connect to your car. If the subscription expires or is turned off, Smart Charging won’t work until it’s renewed or reactivated.

No. If you have a charging schedule set up through your charger or another third-party app, you’ll need to turn it off. Conflicting schedules stop us from smart charging your EV correctly, which means we can’t shift your charging to the cheapest times and you won’t receive the Smart Charging off-peak rate. So your EV is not under, or over charged, make sure only EDF Smart Charging controls your charging schedule.

Smart Charging isn’t compatible with Pod tariffs. As outlined in the Smart Charging bolt-on terms and conditions, if you’re on a Pod tariff, you won’t be eligible for the bolt-on and may be removed if it’s already active on your account.

Yes, your Pod charger can still work with Smart Charging. If you switch to an eligible tariff (such as GoElectric) and have a compatible car, you can add Smart Charging as a bolt-on and start benefiting from automated, optimised charging.

It’s not all bad news; you still have a great alternative! If you have a Pod tariff and charger, you can contact Pod to sign up for their Pod Rewards scheme, which offers smart-charging benefits through their platform.

Billing and rewards

If you’ve opted into Smart Charging, you’ll see your £5 credit on your monthly energy bill. Keep enjoying this as long as you stay opted in and use the smart charging schedule regularly!(1)

Yes, if you’re on one of our EV tariffs with peak and off-peak rates, and have signed up to Smart Charging, then you'll also benefit from lower rates during off-peak times for your whole home.

Great news! You’ll still benefit from our cheaper off-peak rates, even if charging happens outside those hours. This applies to your whole household consumption too!

If you switch to GoElectric or our single-rate electricity tariff:
  • Your Smart Charging connection stays active
  • You'll continue to receive the £5/month reward(1)
  • If you switch to our GoElectric tariff, you'll still benefit from lower rates for your whole home during off-peak times.
You won’t need to do anything, but if your circumstances have changed you may need to accept updated terms and conditions.

If you switch to a tariff other than GoElectric or our single-rate tariff:
  • Smart Charging will be deactivated
  • You will no longer receive your £5 monthly reward
