EDF customers can earn free electricity this May, whatever the weather
- EDF is the only supplier offering customers free electricity on four Sundays over the next month
- Participants have earned over 22.5 million hours of free electricity since 2024, the equivalent of £7.2 million in savings
- Customers can earn up to 64 hours of free electricity by shifting their electricity use during the week
- Plus, customers can benefit from regular free electricity periods with EDF’s FreePhase tariffs
EDF has confirmed it is running its Sunday Saver challenge throughout May, offering customers the opportunity to earn up to 64 hours of free electricity whatever the weather.
‘Sunday Saver’ offers households an easy way to cut their energy bills by earning free electricity on Sundays when they shift electricity usage away from peak hours during the week (4pm – 7pm). The more electricity customers shift, the more free electricity they can earn the following Sunday, with between four and 16 hours available.
Since the start of the Sunday Saver challenge in 2024, participants have earned over 22.5 million hours of free electricity, equating to £7.2 million in bill savings.1 On average, ‘Sunday Savers’ earn 18 hours of free electricity per month.
Ways customers can continue to save during warmer months
With the weather warming up, there are still plenty of ways for customers to make the most of free electricity this summer by shifting their electricity usage away from 4-7pm during the week, for example:
- Avoid using the tumble dryer and instead hanging out clothes outside to air dry
- Close the curtains/blinds in rooms you aren’t using to keep them cool
- Put the dishwasher on at night or breakfast time
- Unplug devices and chargers and use battery power instead
- Put aside gaming consoles and play a game outdoors
- Batch cook at the weekend to save energy and time – just reheat during the week
- Charge electric cars outside of peak times
Joe Souto, Director of Retail at EDF, said: “Regardless of the weather, with Sunday Saver customers can earn free electricity every Sunday, and as we head into the warmer months, there’s still plenty of opportunities to save on bills. Sunday Saver makes it simple for customers to flex their electricity use during busy weekday evenings, save money on their bills, and be rewarded with free electricity. This means customers can focus on enjoying their summer plans and not worry about their bills.
“If more free electricity is what you’re after, customers can also explore our FreePhase tariffs, which give households free electricity whenever there’s an excess of renewable energy. Customers on FreePhase benefitted from 37 hours of free electricity in the last fortnight.”
More ways to save and earn free electricity
Sunday Saver isn’t the only way customers can get free electricity. EDF’s FreePhase Dynamic gives customers free electricity when there’s an excess of renewable generation and electricity demand is low. FreePhase customers got 37 hours of free electricity in the last fortnight.
The FreePhase Dynamic electricity tariff has three pricing rates that reflect daily wholesale energy prices. The three-time bands: green (super off peak, 11pm-6am), amber (off peak 6am-4pm and 7pm-11pm), red (peak 4-7pm), means customers can adapt their electricity use to make the most of cheaper rates.
Customers can sign up to Sunday Saver until 3rd May
Customers can sign-up for May’s Sunday Saver from now until Sunday 3rd May at 11.59pm, with the challenge starting on Monday 4th May. Sunday Saver participants can use their earned free electricity on Sunday 17th, 24th, and 31st May, and Sunday 7th June.
Customers can learn more about the Sunday Saver challenge on our website and sign up via MyAccount.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
What are the eligibility requirements for Sunday Saver?
To take part, customers will need a working smart meter for their electricity supply that is sending EDF readings every 30 minutes. Progress can be tracked on Energy Hub via MyAccount, where users can access a personalised view of their household’s energy use.
How much free electricity can customers earn with Sunday Saver?
Customers can earn up to 16 hours of free electricity each week. A 5% reduction in peak consumption would earn four hours of free electricity, a 20% reduction earns eight hours, 35% earns twelve hours and, for the super savers, using 50% less earns 16 hours of free electricity on a Sunday.
How is FreePhase different from other multiple rate tariffs?
FreePhase offers three-rates: red (peak), amber (off-peak), green (night). FreePhase Dynamic prices are updated daily to reflect the actual prices of electricity. Whilst the electricity market is priced into 48 half-hourly periods, FreePhase Dynamic takes the average for the red, amber and green periods – so customers only have to track three prices a day. FreePhase Dynamic is the only three-rate tariff in the market that tracks daily wholesale prices.
In addition, both FreePhase tariffs will provide customers with free electricity when electricity prices go negative.
1 Based on Sunday Saver data from September – December 2024, March – June 2025 and September 2025 – April 2026 and free electricity days on 25th December 2024, 14th February 2025, 12th July 2025, 10th August 2025 and 25th December 2025. 27,346,942 kwh of free hours × £0.252 per kWh (average kWh cost) * 1.05 (VAT) = (roughly) £7.23 million
