If nothing is done, in ten years the UK won’t have enough power sources to meet our electricity demands. This is called the energy generation gap. To bridge the gap while keeping prices affordable and reducing carbon emissions, we’ll need a diverse mix of generation technologies, including renewables, clean coal, gas and new build nuclear, alongside much greater energy efficiency. We’re looking into many new technologies, not just renewables but solutions like carbon capture and storage (a way to make burning fossil fuel much cleaner in terms of emissions). Renewables like wind and solar power have an intermittent nature and are limited in scale, so we need to consider a range of sources. This could include gas-fired power stations, decentralised energy systems, microgeneration and new nuclear plants.
