How do students pay for gas and electricity?
How you pay for energy depends on where you live.
Student halls
Some university halls include energy costs in your rent. Not sure if yours does? Check your tenancy agreement or ask your accommodation provider.
Shared student houses
If you rent a house with friends, you'll usually pay the gas and electricity bills. One person typically manages the energy account, and everyone splits the costs.
Prepayment meters
Some student homes have older prepayment meters. You’ll need to top up before you use energy. Top up regularly at a local shop displaying PayPoint or Payzone signs, or at your local Post Office.
If your landlord has installed a smart meter, it may use Pay As You Go. You can set up automatic top-ups so you don’t run out, and get alerts when your balance is low. That makes it easier to stay on top of your energy costs.
Before moving in, it's worth checking:
- Who supplies the property's gas and electricity
- Whether the property has a smart meter
- Whether bills are included in the rent
- How costs are shared between housemates
How much do student energy bills cost?
There's no single answer because every household is different
Your energy costs depend on factors such as:
- The size of your property
- The number of people living there
- How well insulated the home is
- Whether you use gas central heating
- Your daily energy habits

FAQs
Why should students track energy usage?
It's really good to stay on top of your energy spend so you don't get bills that are suddenly larger than your budget. Our free Energy Hub tool is designed to help our customers see how much energy they're using at different times of the day to help save cash and carbon where possible.
Do students need to pay energy bills in student accommodation?
It depends on your accommodation contract - if you have an "all-inclusive" contract then your bills are most likely included. However, do check you won't get charged extra if you're using what may be considered as an excessive amount of energy.
If you're renting student accommodation privately, check your contract to understand what your rent covers. If it doesn't cover utilities, for example, gas, electricity and water - this means you'll need to pay for these on top of your rent.
Can students switch energy suppliers in student houses?
If you're in charge of paying your energy bill, then yes - you can switch energy supplier.
What type of energy tariff should I choose?
If you're not sure what energy tariff is best for you, we recommend you look at our price predictions to help you better understand how much energy may cost you in the next year. You may also want to compare energy deals, or read how fixed priced energy may be a good option if you're looking to stick to a monthly budget. If you've got an electric vehicle, and you're looking for the best student energy deal, then an EV tariff may be your best option.
