EDF launches EV charger plan and tariff with no upfront cost
EDF has launched an exclusive offer for drivers who sign-up to one of its two electric vehicle (EV) tariffs, slashing the whole upfront cost of getting a Pod Point home EV charger to £0 and helping drivers save hundreds each year.
Through Pod Drive, a three-year EV charging subscription, customers get the Solo 3S 7.4kW home EV charger (RRP £999) for £40 per month that includes ongoing cashback, 48-hour service and lifetime warranty. Pod Drive typically has a £99 set-up fee, however with EDF’s offer, all upfront costs are removed, helping to make the EV transition even more affordable.
By signing up to EDF’s Go Electric tariff and the Pod Drive subscription, drivers can save up to £280 annually[1] compared to standard variable, spreading the cost of getting an EV home charger and getting peace of mind with servicing and warranty. Additionally, charging with GoElectric and subscribing to Pod Drive will save average drivers £372 a year compared to EV charging using the public charging network[2].
Customers could also earn up to £172.50 per year in cashback if they ‘smart charge’ with Pod[3] , which schedules charging during off-peak hours when grid demand is lower, to maximise savings during less carbon intensive times.
This Pod Drive offer can be accessed by signing up to one of two EDF EV tariffs — GoElectric or Evolve — and registering interest in Pod Drive. EDF will then pass details onto Pod to set-up their plan and arrange their installation.
GoElectric offers customers five hours of off-peak electricity every night from 12am to 5am at just 9p/kWh, backed by 100% zero-carbon electricity.
Rich Hughes, Director of Retail at EDF said: “Pod Drive is a major step forward in making EV ownership easier and more affordable for drivers by removing the upfront costs of getting a charger and allowing customers to spread it across a longer term, much like a phone contract.”
Pod Drive also includes free home EV charger installation[4], a service accredited by Which? to its Trusted Trader standard[5], a 48-hour repair or replace service with 24/7 customer support and lifetime warranty.
To be eligible for Pod Drive, customers are required to have a smart meter and be opted into half hourly meter readings.
EDF is also offering customers the chance to win free energy for a year through a limited-time prize draw, where four winners will be selected at random between September and December 2025. Households can enter the competition here: edfenergy.com/win.
[Frequently Asked Questions]
How do customers register for Pod Drive?
Customers can register interest through EDF who will then pass their details to Pod to get in touch with customers to guide them through their Pod Drive plan and confirm eligibility. Customers will complete their Pod Drive sign-up directly with Pod, and pay the monthly £40 Pod Drive plan fee to Pod. They'll be billed for their EV energy tariff separately by EDF.
Will customers need to pay anything upfront?
No, if they're on one of the eligible EDF’s Go Electric or Evolve tariffs, they won’t need to pay the £99 upfront fee that usually applies to new Pod Drive customers.
Who is eligible for this Pod Drive offer?
To be eligible, customers must:
- Be on either EDF’s Go Electric or Evolve tariffs
- Own or lease an electric vehicle
- Consent to EDF sharing contact details (name, telephone number and email) with Pod so they can contact them to arrange their Pod Drive plan.
- Have a smart meter that is opted in to half hourly (HH) data reads
- Own their property or have the property owners' permission to install an EV charger which must be installed on a brick or plaster wall or other suitable permanent structure 15m or less from your electricity meter), have a private drive, have reliable Wi-Fi and a modern smartphone
What does the warranty include?
Pod offers a repair or replace warranty covering the three-year subscription including 24/7 customer support for any problems. Pod aims to repair the charger within 48 hours and covers all the costs. However, if Pod can't get to customers within 48 hours, they'll cover the costs of public charging until they get everything working, up to a maximum of £50.
Pod will continue to look after the charger for as long as the customer is on Pod Drive. Once the three-year agreement ends, the home charger will remain theirs. Pod will contact customers before their initial Pod Drive agreement comes to an end to discuss extending their subscription at a reduced cost so they can continue to benefit from inclusive miles stress-free warranty, and lifetime cover.
How does Pod’s Smart Charging work?
- Customers plug in normally at home, allowing Pod to “smart charge” their vehicles to meet a target charge level by a specified time, e.g. 100% by 7am.
- Customers pay their energy bill as usual with their chosen energy provider, as well as their Pod Drive subscription.
- Pod then provides up to £172.50 a year in cashback to customers to cover “smart charged” miles.
How does the free energy prize draw work?
To enter, visit www.edfenergy.com/win and complete the online form before 23:59 on 21 December 2025.
Winners will be chosen through four separate prize draws. Customers only need to register once to be entered into all four prize draws. Each winner will receive a £0/month energy tariff for 12 months, subject to a fair use limit equivalent to Ofgem’s medium typical household consumption (e.g. 2,700 kWh electricity and 11,500 kWh gas per year).
[1] Pod Drive saving of £280 compares a customer paying £1,428 annually: Pod Drive for charging consumption (£480) and on Go Electric Jan27 for home consumption (£948) compared to a Standard Variable customer paying £1,708 annually on October 2025 Standard variable (Economy 7 meter DD) rates (£1,376) and the average cost of a charger over 3 years (£333). Calculation over a 3 year average for comparison purposes due to length of Pod Drive – this assumes that tariff rates will stay the same over this period, when Go Electric rates will remain fixed until the end of the term and Standard Variable changes every 3 months. Assumes Ofgem typical home consumption and 2,000 kWh charging consumption (7,000 miles at 3.5 miles/kWh). We use a national average of Electricity single fuel Direct Debit regional prices and actual savings may apply depending on usage and charging patterns.
[2] Pod Drive saving of £372 compares Pod Drive cost of £480 to public charging costing £852. Assumes 7000 miles charging at an EV efficiency of 3.5miles per kWh and assumes 80% charge at public station costing 51p/kWh and the remainder at home at 8.99p/kWh (the national average overnight rate for GoElectric Overnight). Average petrol car efficiency of 36 mpg from https://www.cinch.co.uk/guides/ask-the-experts/what-is-a-good-mpg and petrol price of 134.25p/litre taken from https://www.rac.co.uk/drive/advice/fuel-watch/ on 19 September 2025.
[3] 6Smart Charging refers to Pod Point’s service, EDF’s Smart Charging bolt-on is not available with Pod Drive. Cashback is paid by Pod and is not part of your EDF tariff. Pod pay 8.05p per kWh for Smart Charging your EV with them (correct as of September 2025). Only homes with an electricity supply that's half-hourly settled, where electricity usage is measured and billed in half-hour intervals using data from smart meters, can get up to £172.50 a year. If your home hasn't yet been switched over to half-hourly settlements, your annual cashback allowance will be £115.00. Pod will let you know what type of meter set-up your home has in the Pod Drive joining process. Pod refer to this cashback allowance as EV Miles.
[4] Standard installation is subject to meeting the home installation survey eligibility criteria. If the property doesn't meet the criteria, Pod will provide a quote for any additional works required. If Pod cannot offer Pod Drive, EDF will waive the EV tariff exit fee if the customer switches to another EDF tariff.
[5] EDF’s wholly owned subsidiaries – EDF Heat Pumps (formerly CB Heating), Contact Solar and Pod – have received Which? Trusted Traders endorsement across all three key zero carbon home installation services: heat pump, solar and electric vehicle (EV) charge points.
