EDF maintains position as Britain’s biggest generator of zero carbon electricity
EDF has published its sustainability progress update, highlighting that the supplier continues to be Britain’s biggest generator of zero carbon electricity, generating 18.4% of the nation's energy supply(1). The progress update also demonstrates EDF’s ambitious plans in developing further low carbon solutions, which will create new jobs and help Britain achieve net zero.
To achieve this, the supplier is investing in the development of the UK’s wind, nuclear, and solar energy infrastructure, reducing the country’s reliance on fossil fuels. Projects like Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C, along with renewable initiatives, are central to these efforts, aiming to secure the UK’s energy needs with reliable, long-term, zero carbon power.
Matching ambition with investment, last year EDF marked 25 years of operation in Britain, during which period it has invested £25 billion and, by 2035, EDF plans to significantly increase this investment, enabling £50 billion to develop 15GW of zero carbon electricity. Further, in 2023, for the sixth year running, EDF invested more into Britain than it made in profit (EBITDA) in the UK, in each of the last six years.
Over the last year EDF has reached significant milestones, including:
- Zero Carbon Generation: In 2023, EDF achieved its goal to reduce carbon intensity at the point of generation to zero.
- Hinkley Point C Milestone: Installed the dome on the first reactor at Hinkley Point C in December 2023, supporting 23,500 jobs and training over 1,300 apprentices.
- Socio-Economic Impact: Invested £24 million in education and skills, helping over 8,000 people from disadvantaged backgrounds.
- Renewable Energy Expansion: Operating 1.5GW of renewable capacity with an additional 14GW in development, including the Neart na Gaoithe wind farm set to power 475,000 homes.
EDF’s role in the energy transition extends beyond generating clean electricity. The supplier continues to lead with its delivery of energy efficiency measures and low-carbon solutions for customers, helping them save cash and carbon. By the end of 2023, EDF installed 63,000 energy efficiency measures in 15,000 homes through the ECO4 scheme. The supplier is also strengthening its offerings in technologies like heat pumps and solar PVs, with an additional £180 million allocated in 2024 for smarter, innovative solutions.
Further, in 2023, EDF has maintained its commitment to supporting vulnerable households, providing £15 million in debt relief and payment support during the ongoing affordability crisis.
Reflecting on the achievements and future ambitions of EDF in the UK, Simone Rossi, UK CEO of EDF, said, “Our commitment to a zero carbon future is stronger than ever. We are proud of the milestones we have achieved and are focused on future investments to ensure we remain at the forefront of delivering reliable, zero carbon electricity to millions of homes and businesses in the UK while continuing to help our customers save cash and carbon.”
EDF also welcomes the UK Government’s efforts to accelerate energy infrastructure development and looks forward to partnering with Great British Energy and Mission Control to advance Britain’s energy transition to a net zero future.

About EDF
EDF is driving the transition towards An Electric Britain – a secure, affordable, low-carbon future for everyone. As Britain’s biggest generator of zero carbon electricity, we are investing more than £100 million weekly in Britain’s electricity infrastructure. We supply millions of customers with electricity and help homes and businesses switch to electricity for heating, transport and industrial processes.
We operate five nuclear power stations and more than 35 onshore wind farms and three offshore wind farms. Since 2009, EDF has invested almost £9 billion in the nuclear fleet to improve reliability and extend station lifetimes. The five generating stations currently supply about 12% of the UK’s electricity demand.
EDF is building the UK's nuclear renaissance with the construction of a new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point C. We are a minority investor (12.5%) in and major supplier to a replica plant at Sizewell C in Suffolk. Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C will provide low carbon electricity to meet 14% of UK demand and power around 12 million homes. EDF Group companies Framatome and Arabelle Solutions have a presence in the UK and manufacture critical equipment such as reactor pressure vessels and turbines.
EDF is enabling its 5 million customers, both in business and at home, to choose electric solutions that save cash and carbon, whether it is buying an electric car, generating and storing electricity, selling energy back to the grid or installing solar panels or a heat pump. In 2025, EDF’s Customers business was ranked as one of the Sunday Times’s Best Place to Work.
It is also one of the UK’s leading developers of renewable energy through EDF power solutions UK and Ireland. We have more than 2GW of renewable generation in operation and over 10GW in construction, planning and development across a range of technologies including onshore and offshore wind, solar and battery storage.
We are one of the largest suppliers to British business and a leading supplier of innovative energy solutions that are helping businesses become more energy independent. In addition, the company’s energy services business, Dalkia, one of the UK and Ireland’s largest technical service providers.
