EDF And Matrix Renewables Partner on Major 500MW Battery Storage Project In Scotland

Posted March 30, 2026
  • Large-scale battery project in Scotland will provide new flexibility to support the UK electricity system
  • Asset will help integrate more renewable generation by storing electricity and releasing it during periods of peak demand, and support the grid needs
  • Project will support the UK’s Clean Power 2035 ambitions and Net Zero 2050 target

EDF has entered into a long-term Battery Optimisation Agreement with Matrix Renewables for a 500MW/1GWh battery energy storage system under development at Eccles, Scotland. Under the agreement, EDF will provide route-to-market services and optimise the battery across all energy markets once operational.

The project is currently under construction – scheduled to begin commercial operations in summer 2027 – and will be Matrix Renewables’ first standalone battery storage development in the UK and one of the largest connected to the British electricity system. Located along key transmission corridors between Scotland and England, the site is strategically positioned to support the efficient flow of electricity across the network and to strengthen the grid’s resilience.

When operational, EDF will manage the commercial optimisation and dispatch of the battery using Powershift, its advanced digital trading and optimisation platform. Through Powershift, EDF will maximise value across wholesale and balancing markets, delivering essential grid services, supporting system stability, and enabling greater integration of renewable energy, with EDF now optimising a growing portfolio of battery assets across the UK and approaching 2GW of live, operational capacity under management.

Stuart Fenner, Commercial Director of Business & Wholesale Services at EDF, said:
“Delivering EDF’s mission to build an Electric Britain depends on flexible assets that can respond instantly to the needs of the system. This project will provide exactly that capability. Using our Powershift platform, we will optimise the battery in real time to support grid stability, manage peak demand, and help integrate more low-carbon generation.”

Chris Matthews, Chief Commercial Officer at Matrix Renewables, added:
“We are proud to deliver our first major battery project in the UK alongside a partner of EDF’s experience and capability. This agreement provides a strong platform for our continued investment and growth in the UK’s energy transition.”

All planning conditions have been discharged and full consent secured, enabling construction to progress at pace. The project forms part of Matrix Renewables’ ambition to develop more than 3GW of battery storage in the UK in the coming years.

About EDF

EDF is driving the transition towards An Electric Britain – a secure, affordable, low-carbon future for everyone. As Britain’s biggest generator of zero carbon electricity, we are investing more than £100 million weekly in Britain’s electricity infrastructure. We supply millions of customers with electricity and help homes and businesses switch to electricity for heating, transport and industrial processes.

We operate five nuclear power stations and more than 35 onshore wind farms and three offshore wind farms. Since 2009, EDF has invested almost £9 billion in the nuclear fleet to improve reliability and extend station lifetimes. The five generating stations currently supply about 12% of the UK’s electricity demand.

EDF is building the UK's nuclear renaissance with the construction of a new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point C. We are a minority investor (12.5%) in and major supplier to a replica plant at Sizewell C in Suffolk. Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C will provide low carbon electricity to meet 14% of UK demand and power around 12 million homes. EDF Group companies Framatome and Arabelle Solutions have a presence in the UK and manufacture critical equipment such as reactor pressure vessels and turbines.

EDF is enabling its 5 million customers, both in business and at home, to choose electric solutions that save cash and carbon, whether it is buying an electric car, generating and storing electricity, selling energy back to the grid or installing solar panels or a heat pump. In 2025, EDF’s Customers business was ranked as one of the Sunday Times’s Best Place to Work.

It is also one of the UK’s leading developers of renewable energy through EDF power solutions UK and Ireland. We have more than 2GW of renewable generation in operation and over 10GW in construction, planning and development across a range of technologies including onshore and offshore wind, solar and battery storage.

We are one of the largest suppliers to British business and a leading supplier of innovative energy solutions that are helping businesses become more energy independent. In addition, the company’s energy services business, Dalkia, is one of the UK and Ireland’s largest technical service providers.
