Switching to an EV could save more than £1,350 a year on fuel, as diesel hits record high

Posted October 05, 2026
  • Customers on EDF's GoElectric tariff can save an estimated £1,366 a year compared to diesel, or £1,426 with a Smart Charging bolt-on
  • EDF provides the longest off-peak charging window on all its EV tariffs of seven hours (11pm – 6am every night).

With fuel costs at record highs, drivers switching to an electric vehicle could save more than £1,350 a year compared to filling a diesel or petrol car, as EDF data shows growing interest from motorists looking to make the switch1.

The findings come as motorists continue to look for ways to reduce the cost of driving, with diesel prices reaching £2 per litre for the first time according to recent data from the RAC2.

At a time when fuel and energy costs are placing increasing pressures on households, switching to EV can help drivers cut costs and switch to cleaner motoring. EDF data has found that interest in electric vehicle tariffs has increased by 70% year on year3.

Drivers can make significant savings from petrol and diesel

EDF’s analysis shows a driver covering 7,100 miles per year4 could spend as little as £135.10 annually charging an electric vehicle on EDF's GoElectric tariff, compared with an estimated £1,501.24 a year for filling up with diesel or £1,563.53 a year for petrol.

By switching to an EV and joining EDF’s GoElectric tariff, households could potentially save up to £1,366 compared to topping up with diesel, and £1,428 compared with petrol.

Customers on GoElectric can make further savings by opting into EDF’s Smart Charging bolt-on. Customers simply plug in and let EDF automatically manage their charging when electricity is cheapest and less in demand. In return, customers are rewarded a further £60 off their bill a year, saving them both cash and carbon.

EDF’s EV tariffs offer the longest off-peak charging window

EDF’s EV tariffs provide the longest off-peak charging window available on the market, from 11pm – 6am every night. With seven hours of off‑peak charging, drivers can charge overnight while they sleep, ensuring their car is ready for the day ahead.

EDF’s EV tariffs GoElectric, Pod Point Plug & Power and Pod Point EV Exclusive are all backed by 100% zero carbon electricity5. Unlike some other EV tariffs on the market, EDF’s EV tariffs are compatible with all vehicles, regardless of the make or model.

Joe Souto, Director of Retail at EDF, said: “At a time when fuel costs are at a record high, drivers are understandably wondering how they can reduce the cost of getting from A to B. While making the switch to an EV is a bigger decision than simply changing your electricity tariff, the potential savings on day-to-day running costs are increasingly hard to ignore.

“For example, drivers who can charge at home using EDF’s GoElectric tariff, could save £1,366 a year compared to driving a diesel car. As fuel prices continue to climb, it's clear that electric driving can offer significant savings as well as helping drivers lower their carbon footprint.”

1 Savings calculations are based on annual mileage of 7,100 miles, an EV efficiency of 3.5 miles/kWh and charging on EDF's GoElectric off-peak rate of 6.66p/kWh. Petrol and diesel savings are based on fuel efficiencies of 36mpg and 43mpg respectively and fuel prices used in EDF's calculations at the time of analysis. Actual savings will vary depending on vehicle type, driving behaviour, charging habits, fuel prices and tariff selected.

5 This tariff is backed yearly by 100% zero carbon nuclear electricity as standard. The UK fuel mix disclosure information published by the government (DESNZ) recognises electricity generated from wind, solar and nuclear produces zero carbon dioxide emissions at the point of generation. The zero-carbon electricity purchased is supplied to the National Grid. Customers receive electricity via the National Grid, not directly from zero-carbon generators. View our fuel mix.

EDF is driving the transition towards An Electric Britain – a secure, affordable, low-carbon future for everyone. As Britain’s biggest generator of zero carbon electricity, we are investing more than £100 million weekly in Britain’s electricity infrastructure. We supply millions of customers with electricity and help homes and businesses switch to electricity for heating, transport and industrial processes.

We operate five nuclear power stations and more than 35 onshore wind farms and three offshore wind farms. Since 2009, EDF has invested almost £9 billion in the nuclear fleet to improve reliability and extend station lifetimes. The five generating stations currently supply about 12% of the UK’s electricity demand.

EDF is building the UK's nuclear renaissance with the construction of a new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point C. We are a minority investor (12.5%) in and major supplier to a replica plant at Sizewell C in Suffolk. Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C will provide low carbon electricity to meet 14% of UK demand and power around 12 million homes. EDF Group companies Framatome and Arabelle Solutions have a presence in the UK and manufacture critical equipment such as reactor pressure vessels and turbines.

EDF is enabling its 5 million customers, both in business and at home, to choose electric solutions that save cash and carbon, whether it is buying an electric car, generating and storing electricity, selling energy back to the grid or installing solar panels or a heat pump. In 2025, EDF’s Customers business was ranked as one of the Sunday Times’s Best Place to Work.

It is also one of the UK’s leading developers of renewable energy through EDF power solutions UK and Ireland. We have more than 2GW of renewable generation in operation and over 10GW in construction, planning and development across a range of technologies including onshore and offshore wind, solar and battery storage.
