What is an electricity-only tariff?

An electricity-only tariff is a type of energy deal where you only pay for the electricity you use. It doesn't include charges for gas or other household utilities. This is perfect if your home doesn't use gas, or if you prefer using different energy suppliers for your gas and electricity.

Is dual fuel and electricity-only the same?

No, these are two different types of energy tariff.

  1. Dual fuel tariffs supply a property its electricity and gas, using only one contract through the same energy supplier
  2. Electricity-only tariffs are designed for homes with no gas usage, or for those that prefer different suppliers for their gas and electricity

Switching your electricity supplier is easy and can save you money! Here’s a simple guide to help you:

  1. Compare energy suppliers

Use an online comparison tool or visit supplier websites to find the best electricity only deals. You’ll want to compare prices, customer service, and any extra perks they offer.

  2. Check your contract

Make sure you're not in a fixed contract that has exit fees. If you're out of contract, you’re free to switch without any penalties!

  3. Apply to switch energy provider

Once you’ve found a supplier you like, you can apply directly with them. They’ll handle the switch for you, including getting in touch with your current supplier.

  4. Wait for your switch

The process usually takes about two to three weeks. You’ll still have power during the switch, so no need to worry about disruptions.

  5. Start saving

Once the switch is complete, you’ll start enjoying your new rate!

When you’re exploring electricity only deals, you’ll find a variety of tariffs designed to fit different needs. These typically include:

  • Fixed energy tariffs: lock in a set price per kWh for a set period, giving you predictable bills
  • Stand variable rate tariffs: prices can change with the whole sale energy market, offering flexibility but less price certainty
  • Time of use tariffs: prices vary depending on when you use electricity, perfect if you can shift your usage to off-peak times
