This Christmas, EDF is spreading festive cheer by giving away 804,800 free hours of electricity on Christmas Day, as part of its popular Sunday Saver December challenge.

A total of 100,600 customers have signed up and will receive the eight hours of free electricity on Christmas Day, as well as the opportunity to earn more free electricity on Sundays if they shift their usage away from weekday peak hours too (4 – 7pm). To receive the free Christmas Day electricity, all eligible customers were required to do was click a button and sign up, regardless of their tariff.

In total since the launch of Sunday Saver in September, 122,038 customers have taken part earning more than 482,000 free hours of electricity, with between 4 and 16 hours of free electricity on Sundays on offer depending on how much they shift by.

Consumer research commissioned by the energy provider indicates that almost half (47%) of Brits plan to use their ovens and hobs more on Christmas Day, 34% will use additional cooking appliances, and 42% will play more music, filling homes with festive tunes. Notably, 60% of Brits will start cooking Christmas dinner between 8 – 10am, perfectly aligning with the free electricity hours from 8am – 4pm on Christmas Day.

Rich Hughes, Director of Retail at EDF said: "On Christmas Day we all have our ovens on for longer, are using more appliances, and have the TV on with festive films or Christmas specials. This year we are giving more than 800,000 hours of free electricity so customers can cook their Christmas dinner on us, and enjoy the day with one less expense to worry about.

“Not only that, if they reduce during peak times during the week, they could earn up to a further 16 hours of free electricity on Sunday later that week! We're thrilled that our commitment to customers is being recognised, with EDF recently achieving a 4.7 rating on Trustpilot for customer service.”

Since its launch in September, Sunday Saver has attracted customers eager to save cash and carbon, with 88% of participants saying it encouraged them to think of new ways to save energy, and an impressive 94% saying they would participate in Sunday Saver again.
