What is an air source heat pump tariff?
An air source heat pump (ASHP) tariff is designed specifically for heat pump users. It's simply an electricity tariff that works alongside your heat pump. Many heat pump tariffs will offer discounts on electricity making them a more cost-effective option than the Standard Variable tariff.
How does an ASHP tariff work?
Depending on your supplier, a heat pump tariff offers discounted rates throughout the day.
At EDF, our tariffs provide six hours of discounted electricity daily during off-peak periods (4am – 7am and 1pm – 4pm) without any peak rates. Customers who switch to our tariffs can save at least £164(1) compared to the Standard Variable tariff (SVT).
Our ASHP tariffs consist of three pricing rates every day, which are:
- A day unit rate set at our Standard tariff rate in your region
- A heat pump tariff rate between 4am –7am and 1pm – 4pm, where you get a 10p/kWh discount off the Standard tariff rate in your area
- For the Heat Pump Tracker there is a daily standing charge matching the Standard tariff rate in your region. This rate has no discount. The Heat Pump & Save Tracker has no standing charge!
Our heat pump tariffs offer a flexible pricing model that adjusts to Ofgem's Price Cap, which is influenced by the wholesale energy costs. This means the unit rates are reviewed every three months and can change, but your 10p discount remains the same.
Not got a heat pump?
Future-proof your home and reduce your carbon footprint with an air source heat pump - the future of low carbon heating! The government grant could save you £7,500, bringing the price down to £3,999(4)(Price assumes reuse of a suitable existing hot water cylinder. Homes requiring a new cylinder will have an additional cost).

Heat pump tariff FAQs
Are heat pumps cheaper than gas?
It depends on your current gas boiler. The Energy Saving Trust estimates you could save £260 by switching from an old G-rated boiler to a heat pump. When compared to a new A-rated boiler, an air source heat pump is only £40 more, and it’s low-carbon, so you’ll be doing your bit for the planet.
How much do heat pumps cost?
The cost of a heat pump varies based on factors like the size of the heat pump, how well your home is insulated, the size of your home, and whether radiator upgrades are needed. The starting price is £3,999(4)after the government grant (Price assumes reuse of a suitable existing hot water cylinder. Homes requiring a new cylinder will have an additional cost). How efficient are air source heat pumps?
Air source heat pumps are very efficient, did you know they're 300% more efficient than a standard gas boiler! Their efficiency comes from extracting heat from the environment, rather than generating it directly from energy sources such as natural gas.
What type of tariffs are air source heat pump tariffs? (e.g. fixed, tracker etc.)
Our heat pump tariffs are tracker tariffs. They are designed to save you money when it counts – between 4-7am, before your day begins, and again between 1-4pm for that afternoon energy boost. During these times, your electricity will cost 10p less per unit (kWh), VAT included. For the rest of the day, the standing charge and unit rates will be in line with the Ofgem Price Cap, making sure they are fair and transparent. Please note: the Heat Pump & Save Tracker tariff has no standing charge.
What's the difference between a standard energy tariff and a heat pump tariff?
The key difference is that heat pump tariffs are specifically designed to save you money when it matters most. They’re a much better option for heat pump users compared to a standard electricity tariff. Our tariffs include two discount periods each day, and the Heat Pump & Save Tracker even has no daily standing charge!
Are EDF's heat pump tariffs time of use tariffs?
Yes, our heat pump tariffs are time of use tariffs. By using your heat pump during the cheap rate periods (4-7am and 1-4pm), you could save over £164. Set a heating schedule that matches these lower electricity rates. The more you shift your usage, the more you’ll save!
Are there any hidden fees with heat pump tariffs?
There are no hidden fees, only savings! With all our heat pump tariffs, there are no exit fees, giving you the flexibility to switch whenever you want.
Do I need a smart meter for a heat pump tariff?
Yes. To join our heat pump tariffs, you'll need a smart meter that sends meter readings every half hour.
Are EDF's heat pump tariffs eco-friendly?
All of our air source heat pump tariffs are backed by zero carbon electricity that we've generated ourselves.(2)
How often should I review my air source heat pump tariff to make sure it's still right for me?
This depends on the benefits you're getting from your tariff. Since most tariffs last for a year, you’ll want to review your options and choose the best one for you when the year ends. However, our heat pump tariffs have no exit fees, so you're not locked in - you can switch whenever it suits you!
Do air source heat pumps qualify for feed-in tariffs?
No, heat pumps don't qualify for a Feed-in tariff. Feed-in tariffs are typically available for systems that produce renewable electricity, such as solar panels or wind turbines.
How do I sign up to the Heat Pump & Power Tracker Tariff?
The Heat Pump & Power Tracker offer has ended. If you’ve already paid your deposit by February 28 and installed your heat pump by September 30, don't worry, you’re still eligible to join the tariff and enjoy its benefits.
