EDF slashes standing charges by £100 with new tracker tariff

Posted January 24, 2025
  • New fixed-term tracker tariff, EDF Simply Tracker Extra Apr26, replaces EDF’s Simply Tracker Mar26 tariff, and lowers standing charges for most customers.
  • Tariff tracks Standard Variable prices to always guarantee a £100 saving against the price cap.
  • The standing charge discount ensures all customers benefit equally from predictable cost savings.

EDF has launched a new tracker tariff, Simply Tracker Extra Apr26, designed to provide consistent savings to customers through discounting standing charges by £100.

Replacing EDF’s Simply Tracker Mar26 tariff, this new one-year, fixed-term tracker tariff tracks Standard Variable prices to consistently undercut Ofgem’s price cap by £100, offering guaranteed savings of £50 per fuel, with the discount applied through standing charges. Standing charges are fixed daily charges levied on customers’ bills, which cover the cost of supplying electricity and gas to homes.

By discounting standing charges instead of unit rates, all EDF customers who sign up to EDF’s Simply Tracker Extra tariff will see the same financial benefit, even if they are low energy consumers. The discount is made possible thanks to how EDF buys energy in advance, taking the savings made on energy costs and applying them to standing charges to ensure everyone can benefit.

Based on the 1st January price cap level, the new tariff offers an annual average bill cost of £1,638 for a dual fuel customer paying via direct debit.

Rich Hughes, Director of Retail at EDF, said: “With our new tracker tariff, customers can rest assured that no matter what happens with energy prices over the next year, they will always save £100 against the price cap.

“By discounting standing charges, the tariff also ensures all customers benefit equally from predictable cost savings, while supporting those that are already taking steps to reduce their carbon footprint and improve energy efficiency.”

With 80% of consumers currently on Standard Variable Tariffs, EDF’s new tracker tariff provides an opportunity for widespread savings.

To sign up to EDF Simply Tracker Extra Apr26, existing customers can do so via MyAccount online or via the EDF app, or new customers can sign up here. The tariff is available to new and existing customers on Direct Debit, Cash Cheque and Pay As You Go for a limited time only.

Smart meters can be installed at no extra cost and provide a range of benefits including EDF’s exclusive Energy Hub platform where customers can access a personalised view of their energy use.

For an extra £50 off your energy bill, EDF customers and their friends can also sign up to ‘Refer a Friend’ via MyAccount online.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the EDF Simply Tracker Extra tariff discount standing charges instead of unit rates?

Discounting standing charges instead of unit rates ensures all customers see the same financial benefit, regardless of how much energy they use. When discounts are applied to unit rates instead, the amount a customer saves will fluctuate based on their consumption. Through discounting standing charges, EDF guarantees the same discount for all customers signed up to its Simply Tracker Extra tariff.
