EDF and Terra Firma Energy partner to optimise new 20MW flexible generation project

Posted December 11, 2024
  • EDF has entered into a long-term agreement with Terra Firma Energy to optimise a new 20MW flexible gas generation plant.
  • The new plant development, Miners Road, will help meet the UK’s electricity needs by contributing 20.7MW of electricity per hour, and ensuring reliable, dispatchable power during periods of extreme demand.
  • This collaboration solidifies EDF's position as a major player in optimising flexible generation.

Terra Firma Energy, a leading company in flexible energy generation, recently signed a Route to Market trading agreement with EDF to optimise a new 20MW gas peaker plant, Miners Road, located in Wrexham.

The partnership aims to assist the National Grid in balancing supply and demand by quickly providing backup electricity during peak demand or low renewable generation periods, helping to ensure a stable and secure electricity supply across the UK.

The new 20MW peaking plant will inject additional energy into the National Grid during peak demand times, supplying electricity to approximately 47,000 average UK homes and enhancing the UK’s capacity to leverage renewable and sustainable energy sources on a large scale. Flexible peaking plants are crucial in maintaining a stable energy supply when renewable energy generation alone cannot meet grid demands. By providing reliable backup energy, peaker plants will help smooth the transition as more low carbon energy sources come online.

Scheduled to commence operations in December 2024, this collaborative effort will see EDF leveraging its advanced flexibility platform, PowerShift, and its dedicated 24/7 Trading Team to optimise the performance of the Miners Road plant. EDF will undertake all trading activities on behalf of Terra Firma Energy, covering gas, electricity, and carbon, and strategically dispatch the asset to capitalise on optimal spark spreads and maximise revenue generation.

"This partnership with Terra Firma Energy underscores EDF's commitment to driving the transition towards a cleaner, more sustainable energy future," said Stuart Fenner, WMS Commercial Director, EDF Wholesale Market Services. “By combining our expertise in energy trading with Terra Firma Energy's innovative approach to renewable energy projects, we are confident in our ability to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of Miners Road, contributing to a more resilient and sustainable energy landscape."

Terra Firma has successfully developed several flexible generating projects throughout the UK and currently has a further 79MW under construction with an additional pipeline of 90MW.

By leveraging these advanced trading and dispatch capabilities, Terra Firma Energy and EDF play a pivotal role in enhancing grid reliability, supporting the integration of renewable energy sources, and contributing to the overall resilience of the UK's energy infrastructure in the transition towards a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.

About EDF

EDF is driving the transition towards An Electric Britain – a secure, affordable, low-carbon future for everyone. As Britain’s biggest generator of zero carbon electricity, we are investing more than £100 million weekly in Britain’s electricity infrastructure. We supply millions of customers with electricity and help homes and businesses switch to electricity for heating, transport and industrial processes.

We operate five nuclear power stations and more than 35 onshore wind farms and three offshore wind farms. Since 2009, EDF has invested almost £9 billion in the nuclear fleet to improve reliability and extend station lifetimes. The five generating stations currently supply about 12% of the UK’s electricity demand.

EDF is building the UK's nuclear renaissance with the construction of a new nuclear power station at Hinkley Point C. We are a minority investor (12.5%) in and major supplier to a replica plant at Sizewell C in Suffolk. Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C will provide low carbon electricity to meet 14% of UK demand and power around 12 million homes. EDF Group companies Framatome and Arabelle Solutions have a presence in the UK and manufacture critical equipment such as reactor pressure vessels and turbines.

EDF is enabling its 5 million customers, both in business and at home, to choose electric solutions that save cash and carbon, whether it is buying an electric car, generating and storing electricity, selling energy back to the grid or installing solar panels or a heat pump. In 2025, EDF’s Customers business was ranked as one of the Sunday Times’s Best Place to Work.

It is also one of the UK’s leading developers of renewable energy through EDF power solutions UK and Ireland. We have more than 2GW of renewable generation in operation and over 10GW in construction, planning and development across a range of technologies including onshore and offshore wind, solar and battery storage.

We are one of the largest suppliers to British business and a leading supplier of innovative energy solutions that are helping businesses become more energy independent. In addition, the company’s energy services business, Dalkia, one of the UK and Ireland’s largest technical service providers.
