Solar tariffs FAQs

We offer two types of solar tariffs: import tariffs and export tariffs.

  • Import tariffs: These are the rates you pay for electricity you use from the grid, similar to traditional energy tariffs.
  • Export tariffs (SEG): These are the rates we pay you for any excess electricity you generate - typically with solar panels - and send to the Grid.

Import tariffs cover what you use, while export tariffs pay you for the energy you produce and don’t use.

Under the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), energy suppliers are required to pay a set rate per unit of electricity they receive.

Here’s how it works:

• If you’re signed up for SEG and your solar panels are connected to the National Grid, you can choose to store your excess energy in a battery or export your excess energy and make some cash.

• When you send energy to the grid, your energy supplier will pay you a fixed rate per unit based on their tariff. If you join our Export Exclusive 12m V2 tariff, you could make 24p per kWh for the energy you export!

It’s a simple way to earn from the energy you don’t use!

Absolutely! Solar panels can lower your energy bills, and with our Empower Tracker Exclusive V2 tariff, you might even reduce them to zero(1). The Energy Saving Trust estimates you could save up to £690 annually with solar panels.(4)

The time it takes for solar panels to pay for themselves depends on factors such as:

  • The number of panels installed and their cost
  • Whether you include a battery
  • Your location
  • Your energy usage patterns

Solar panels generate renewable energy without producing greenhouse gases. However, when you’re not using your solar energy, you’ll rely on electricity from the Grid. The environmental impact depends on how the grid’s electricity is produced - renewable sources have a lower impact than fossil fuels. It's worth noting that all of our solar tariffs are backed by zero carbon electricity we generate ourselves(2)

If you pair your solar panels with a battery, you can generate electricity with your panels and store it for later use. This stored energy can be used during peak times, reducing your reliability on the Grid.

To get the most out of your solar setup, choose a tariff that aligns with your energy use. Be sure to compare options and remember, you can choose separate suppliers for your import and export tariffs.

Yes, solar panels, combined with a battery, can power a UK home on most days. The amount of power generated depends on the number of panels installed and your energy usage. On average, a UK home consumes around 2,700 kWh of electricity annually. For an average house, installing 8-10 panels along with a battery should allow you to rely on your solar energy for most of the year. During winter, when daylight is limited, you may need to draw power from the Grid, but for the majority of the year, the solar energy you've stored should be enough.

Yes, solar panels are tax-free in the UK. As of 1 April 2022, there is a zero-rate VAT on the installation of energy-saving materials (ESMs), such as solar panels, in residential homes.
