EDF's Open Tariff APIs
Smarter energy at home shouldn’t require constant checking, switching or second-guessing. That’s why EDF has opened up access to its residential tariffs through secure, open APIs.
Developers and innovators can now use live tariff data to build tools that automatically shift energy use to cheaper or greener times. The result? Homes that save money and cut carbon without anyone needing to think about it.
Because let’s be honest, modern homes are getting more complex. Electric vehicles (EVs), heat pumps, solar panels, batteries, smart meters. They’re powerful technologies, but only if they work together. Should you charge your car now? Run the heat pump later? Wait for prices to fall? With open tariff access, those decisions can happen automatically.
Open tariffs mean more choice and smarter tools
By making tariff data openly available, we’re giving developers, technology providers and startups the ability to build services that automatically match household energy use with cheaper or greener periods.
That means customers don’t need to constantly check prices or adjust their behaviour. The technology does it for them.
Moving away from closed or partner-only access unlocks:
- Faster innovation in smart home energy
- Greater choice for customers
- Simpler ways to save money and reduce carbon
Smart energy can simply run in the background.
How open tariff data helps households save money and cut carbon
Many homes already have the building blocks for smarter energy use. The real challenge is getting those technologies to work together in a way that feels simple and effortless.
Open access to tariff data makes that possible. Energy apps, EV chargers, home batteries and other smart systems can automatically respond to price signals, helping households:
- Use electricity when it’s cheaper
- Shift demand to greener periods
- Get more value from the tech they already own
Take a home with a heat pump and an electric vehicle. Using an app powered by EDF’s open tariffs, the heat pump can pre-heat the house when electricity is cheaper and greener, while the EV charges overnight at the lowest available rate.
No manual switching. No constant monitoring. The system makes the decisions, saving money and cutting carbon automatically.
Mark Askew, Solutions and Automation Director at EDF Retail, explains:
By making our publicly available residential tariffs accessible through open APIs, we are creating an environment where innovation can flourish. This is about giving developers the freedom to build solutions that genuinely benefit customers, helping them save money, reduce carbon and make energy management effortless.
Helping the Grid and the planet
When homes automatically shift energy use to off-peak or lower-carbon times, it doesn't just benefit individual households. It also helps support a more flexible, efficient electricity system, an important part of the UK’s transition to net zero.
Smarter homes play a growing role in balancing the Grid, reducing pressure at peak times and making better use of renewable generation.
How to access our APIs
Our tariff APIs are live and ready to use. Whether you’re an established tech provider or an independent developer, you can start building services that help households make better use of their energy.
