Smart Export Guarantee Tariffs
We're big fans of renewable energy at EDF, which is why we have a range of SEG tariffs to help you turn your exported energy into earnings. Before you can access a SEG tariff, you'll need to fill out a SEG application first.
What is the Smart Export Guarantee?
EDF Energy is a Mandatory SEG Licensee
The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) is a licensee requirement to offer an export tariff to eligible generators. This tariff is for you where you have installed one of the below technologies with capacity up to 5MW or up to 50kW for Micro-CHP:
- solar photovoltaic (solar PV)
- wind
- micro combined heat and power (CHP)
- hydro
- anaerobic digestion (AD)
Customers also need a smart meter or half-hourly electricity meter and must not already receive payments under the Feed In Tariff (FIT) Scheme or already receive SEG payments from another SEG licensee.
If you're a business and your installation is larger than the limits set for SEG, please check our Power Purchase Agreement for large businesses.
What SEG tariffs are we offering?
Our range of SEG tariffs offers something for everyone and they're all backed by zero carbon electricity we generate ourselves(1)

Applying for the Smart Export Guarantee Variable Tariffs
As part of the sign-up process, please get together the following documents:
- copy of MCS certificate (if your system is over 50kW please provide commissioning paperwork)
- copy of your electricity bill (if you are already supplied by EDF energy you do not need to provide this)
- name, address and bank details
- photo of your smart export meter reading
Once you've signed up, one of our team will be in touch to set you up and check any details.
Once registered on the plan we'll be in touch for the first export read if you're not set up to do this automatically. After this first read, it will then be quarterly until your plan ends.
These are a variable rate which means the price of your energy could go up or down. If this happens, we'll give you advanced written notice so that you can switch to a different tariff or supplier if you wish.
Looking to renew your SEG tariff?
If you're already registered for one our SEG tariffs, we'll send you a reminder when your reading or contract is due. The reminder will advise you what reads are required and what you need to do. We'll then check all the details, validate your meter reading(s) and make a payment in accordance with your terms and conditions.
What details you'll need to submit a meter reading
- your 9-digit Smart Export Guarantee identity number e.g. SEG 123456781 (You can find this on your term sheet or in the reminder email or letter we sent you)
- your postcode
- your total active export smart meter read
Our tariff requirements
Signing up to our EDF Export tariff(s) means you confirm you have:
- Installed generation capacity which consists of Anaerobic Digestion, PV, onshore wind and/or Hydro generation only and will only use these installations to export electricity as part of this agreement. Please note that our Export Exclusive and Export fixed tariffs are only available for solar PV.
- An export smart meter installed capable of recording readings at half-hourly intervals. If the meter is not capable of sending us half-hourly readings automatically, you will provide actual readings from the export meter every quarter
- Overall generation payment limits TIC of less than 5MW (50kW for our Export Exclusive and Export fixed tariffs) and a total heat and power (micro CHP) up to 50kw
- Proof of ownership
- Accreditation certificates for the installation

FAQs about our Smart Export Tariffs
What is a variable tariff?
Our EDF Export Variable Value and EDF Export Variable tariffs are variably-priced, this means the price may go up or down.
If we plan to change the price of your exported electricity, we’ll contact you in writing at least 5 days before to let you know. There is no exit fee for our variable tariffs.
How do I get paid with the SEG tariff?
We will send you a read reminder every quarter, once received you can submit your export reading.
You’ll be paid based on the tariff unit rate multiplied by the eligible electricity that’s exported to the grid. We aim to make a payment via bank transfer within 28 days of receiving your meter reading.
How do I get an export meter reading?
The way you identify the export meter reading will depend on the type of meter you have.
- If you have a smart meter, the export reading will be shown on the smart meter itself. To see the reading you'll need to press the button(s) on your smart meter and scroll through the various menus on the meter display. This will all depend on the type of smart meter you have installed.
- If you have a separate export meter, your meter reading will be the number shown on the main display of the meter. You may need to press a button for it to be displayed or illuminated.
Can I have a SEG tariff if I have a battery storage?
If there is an eligible renewable energy installation linked to the battery storage, any electricity fed into the grid will be eligible for SEG payments.
Is there a limit to the amount of electricity I can export?
There is no limit of how much electricity can be exported to the grid, but it can’t be more than the amount of renewable energy your system can generate. We may write to you to confirm your export reading if it appears to be greater than the amount your system can generate.
Can I apply for SEG if I am currently a Feed in Tariff (FiT) customer?
Unfortunately, you will not be able to apply for more than one export scheme for the same installation.
If you're currently receiving FiT payments, you can opt out of receiving export payments under the FiT scheme and sign-up for the SEG tariff instead.
Please note once you opt out your FiT export, you cannot opt back in for 12 months. You will also not be able to return to Deem export payments and will be paid based on metered export moving forward.
I am moving home soon, what do I need to do with my current SEG contract?
You'll need to take an export reading from your meter on the day that you move out of your property. You can email us at hello@edfenergy.com or call us on 0333 006 9950(4).
If you are unable to send us the reading you have taken straight away, don’t worry. Just send it to us as soon as you can.
Can I take over an existing SEG contract from the previous owner?
If you've moved into a new home and you wish to receive SEG payments as a new owner, you'll need to sign up to a new SEG tariff with us, or with another SEG licensee.
