This is the car for you if… You’ve always been a fan of the Volkswagen Golf and want the same comfortable experience – but in a car powered by electricity.
The Volkswagen Golf has amassed an army of fans since it first launched in 1974. And it’s easy to see why: the Golf is sporty, yet practical; classic yet cool; and nippy yet surprisingly spacious inside.
Then in 2014, Volkswagen introduced the all-electric version: The e-Golf. And its admirers haven’t been disappointed.
That’s probably because when you compare the electric and petrol versions, it’s hard to spot the difference. So if you’re already one of the Golf’s many diehard fans, the all-electric version is an obvious choice.
From the outside, the Volkswagen e-Golf looks exactly the same as its fuel-powered equivalent. It has the same clean shape, filled in alloy wheels and neat LED lights. Volkswagen has even placed the charging point in the same place as the fuel tank. But look a little closer, and you’ll spot the blue accents – including the signature blue flash along the front grille – which reveal that this is the e-Golf.
Inside, there’s the familiar spacious interior of the standard Golf with comfy seats and ample leg room. The signature electric blue strip makes its appearance inside the e-Golf too, on the leather steering wheel. You also open the e-Golf with a key fob and put a key into the ignition to start the car – just like that used on the Golf. But look a little closer and you’ll spot some important differences…
For a start, the digital dashboard has gone electric. So on your rev counter there’s a handy dial with green and blue sections. You’re in the green range when you’re driving economically – nipping around town, for instance. But put your foot down, and the dial will head into the blue.
Another of the big differences is the lack of a gearbox. The e-Golf is an automatic vehicle. And alongside the standard Parking, Neutral and Drive modes you’ll find the ‘B’ mode. Switch to this from Drive mode to take advantage of the e-Golf’s regenerative braking system. And use the forward movement of the car to charge the car.
But what about the driving experience? Well if you’re a Golf fan, you won’t be disappointed… In fact, you might not notice much difference. The e-Golf has speedier acceleration – doing 0-62mph in 9.3 seconds – and comfortably handles the road. It’s ideal for nipping around town and manoeuvring into tight parking spaces. But what you will spot, however, is how pleasantly quiet the car is to drive. There’s no engine noise, which makes for a pleasant and relaxing driving experience, whether you’re in town or country.
So if you’re looking for all the practical and familiar benefits of a Golf – but in a fully-electric version – why not consider the e-Golf?
Our three favourite e-Golf features:
- The practical large boot, which is ideal for luggage, shopping, prams… pretty much whatever you want to throw in here.
- The filled in alloy wheels – an aerodynamic feature that helps save energy by reducing drag. Plus, they look good.
- The familiar key fob – why change what works?
You’ll like the Volkswagen e-Golf if you… love everything about the Golf, but want to go electric.
