Our top tip: If you have a smart meter and pay by Direct Debit, your account should almost manage itself. How? Smart meters are clever and automatically submit meter readings to us, that way you’ll get accurate bills. If you have a Direct Debit payment set up, your payment will then go out 14 days after your invoice is issued, which will be based on your actual consumption. That said, you should keep an eye on your account and that’s easy to do when you’re on the go with MyAccount.
Bonus tip: If you sign up to a fixed tariff you can rest assured your unit rates will stay the same for the length of your tariff, so nice nasty surprises if the wholesale market prices go up.

Should I check my small business energy account regularly?
Yes. Even if you have a smart meter and direct debit set up, we recommend checking your account is all in order. This can be done within a few minutes in MyAccount. We recommend you check:
Your monthly invoices – you’ll get these via email or letter depending in your preference.
Meter readings – you want to check your meter reading are based on actuals rather than estimates so you’re only paying for the energy your business is using.
That you’re on a tariff right for your business – if you’ve just moved into a property, you could be on a deemed tariff which are normally more expensive than a fixed tariff. It’s always good to check what tariff you’re on and when it expires.
If you could reduce your businesses consumption – with Energy Hub you can see your business energy consumption. Having your data preference as half hourly means you have access to detailed data that could help you spot where you can reduce your energy usage.
