Information, help and support for businesses

Training and funding

The safety, quality and capability of suppliers involved in the project will need to meet the high standards demanded by a nuclear site and by the need for the construction to progress to programme. Feedback from our supplier engagement activity over the past few years has shown particular demand for business support in a range of areas.

The Hinkley Supply Chain Team has strengthened the offer for supply chain development following collaboration between Somerset Chamber of Commerce, SWMAS Ltd (delivering the Manufacturing Advisory Service) and GWE Business West Ltd (Delivering Business Support).

Training for businesses and suppliers

Based on feedback from our supplier engagement activity over the past few years, the demand for supplier development needs falls into four areas:

  1. Strategy & Management: Business Strategy and Planning; Leadership and Project Management; Finance and Funding

  2. Procurement & Tendering: HPC procurement process and requirements; identifying route to HPC market; understanding contracts and risk; tendering and bid writing

  3. Accreditation & Certification: developing quality standards & accreditation; developing safety standards & accreditation; developing environmental standards & accreditation

  4. Workforce Skills: meeting SQEP (Suitably Qualified & Experienced Personnel) requirements for HPC; up-skilling existing worker skills and trades; supervisory skills; on-boarding requirements (Triple Bar, CCNSG, Nuclear Site Induction Process)

The Hinkley Supply Chain portal has details of over 50 providers of business support that can help with the delivery of all of the above requirements. If you would like to review the suppliers that can help with the categories of support above please email the Hinkley Supply Chain Team with your requirement and we will provide you with a list of relevant Somerset providers.

Please email office@hinkleysupplychain.co.uk and provide your company name and the business support category & requirement for which you require training provider names.

Local businesses

During construction the gross value to the local economy will be over £200 million per year during the years of core construction activity.  This value is primarily made up of major supply chain contracts with local companies, salaries paid to local people during construction, and the spending of workers coming into the area.

And we are investing over £15 million in training, education, and skills in Somerset, including over £6 million for West Somerset Community College and Bridgwater College, meaning local businesses will also have access to a bigger pool of skilled potential employees.
