Smart Charging FAQs
Daily charging and control
Do I need to be on an EDF EV tariff to be eligible for Smart Charging?
No, our Smart Charging bolt-on is available to any customers on a single rate tariff too. If you're looking for an EV tariff, explore our EV tariff options today to see if there are more savings you could benefit from while enjoying all the benefits of smarter charging!
What will change in my existing charging activities?
We will send a charging signal directly to your electric vehicle to turn it on or off. This signal will take account of your charging settings and charge the EV at the most economical times for the National Grid (lowest wholesale electricity cost). This information also shows in your EDF app.
What if I need to charge my electric vehicle immediately?
No worries! Just plug in and use the boost charge functionality to charge your EV. This is for emergencies only, as it won't allow you to charge when it's cheapest and best for the carbon impact. It could also cost you more if you use this functionality during peak times. You can also boost charge from your EDF app!
How often can I update my charging settings?
As much as you like! Initially, you'll be set up using our default settings. These timings will charge your EV to 80% by 8am daily. If you want to change these, you can do so. Your new settings will stay the same until you decide to change them. If you need to adjust your battery limit, such as charging to 100%, you can easily do this by adjusting your charging schedule using the EDF app or online in MyAccount.
How do I opt back into Smart Charging?
If you’re on an eligible EDF EV tariff(1), you can opt into Smart Charging anytime.
- Just log in using the EDF app or online in MyAccount
- Head to your electric vehicle section
- Toggle to "Enable Smart Charging," and reconnect your EV or charger
- Accept the latest terms, and you’re good to go!
Once completed, Smart Charging will be active again and you’ll start receiving the £5/month credit and access to whole-home off-peak pricing during scheduled charges.
Do I need to be at home for Smart Charging to work?
Yes, you need to be at home for smart charging to work. Your EV needs to be connected to the charger so we can optimise the charging process. This will not affect your charging at other locations.
Can I connect more than one EV to Smart Charging?
Currently, Smart Charging can only support one electric vehicle per account. But we are working on expanding to more than one EV in the future!
What’s the difference between connecting Smart Charging through your EV and connecting by your charger?
Depending on your electric vehicle and home charger, you may be able to Smart Charge through your EV or your charger, or sometimes both – in this situation, you may be asked to choose which option you’d like to use.
Connecting to Smart Charging through your EV:
As your car shares its battery level with us, we automatically adjust charging to meet your preferences and the schedule you set, while making sure your charging happens at cheapest, off-peak times. We always know how much charge your EV needs, which means connecting to Smart Charging through your EV is a mostly “hands-off” experience for you.
Connecting to Smart Charging through your charger:
This is a bit more hands-on. Since your EV charger doesn’t share your battery level, we can’t see how full your EV is.
- You set the amount of charge you want to add each time you plug in.
- The same daily top-up is applied each time you plug-in to charge, unless you update and change the amount.
- If you want the system to automatically repeat the new charge amount, you’ll need to unplug and reconnect your EV.
What do I need to do if I’m moving home and want to keep Smart Charging?
If you’re moving home, just let EDF know your moving date and set up your new electricity supply with us at your new address.
Once your new supply is active, you will need to disconnect your EV and charger in MyAccount and sign back up to the Smart Charging bolt-on when your EV is plugged in at your new address.
Do I need an active car manufacturer subscription for Smart Charging to work?
Yes. If your EV requires a connectivity or app subscription from the manufacturer, it must be active so we can connect to your car. If the subscription expires or is turned off, Smart Charging won’t work until it’s renewed or reactivated.
Can I keep my existing charging schedule if I join Smart Charging?
No. If you have a charging schedule set up through your charger or another third-party app, you’ll need to turn it off. Conflicting schedules stop us from smart charging your EV correctly, which means we can’t shift your charging to the cheapest times and you won’t receive the Smart Charging off-peak rate. So your EV is not under, or over charged, make sure only EDF Smart Charging controls your charging schedule.
Billing and rewards
Where will I see the £5/month reward on my bill?
If you’ve opted into Smart Charging, you’ll see your £5(3) credit on your monthly energy bill. Keep enjoying this as long as you stay opted in and use the smart charging schedule regularly!
Does Smart Charging affect my whole home’s electricity pricing?
Yes. By joining Smart Charging, you'll benefit from off-peak pricing for your whole home, during charging schedules.
What happens if my EV charges out of off-peak hours? How will I be compensated?
Great news! You’ll still benefit from our cheaper off-peak rates, even if charging happens outside those hours. This applies to your whole household consumption too!
What happens if I change my energy tariff?
If you change your electricity tariff, here’s what happens to your Smart Charging setup:
If you switch to another eligible EV tariff(1)
- Your Smart Charging connection stays active
- You’ll continue to receive the £5/month reward
- You’ll still benefit from off-peak pricing on whole-home usage during charging schedules.
You don't need to do anything, unless your eligibility has changed. If this happens, you'll need to reaccept our updated terms and conditions.
If you switch to a non-EV tariff (or a non-eligible plan):
- Smart Charging will be deactivated
- You’ll lose access to the £5 monthly reward
- Your EV will still charge normally, but without smart scheduling or off-peak benefits for whole-home usage.
