Smart Export Guarantee Tariffs for small businesses

At EDF, we’re passionate about renewable energy - which is why we offer a range of Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) tariffs designed to help small businesses turn their exported energy into earnings. To access a SEG tariff, you’ll need to contact us at hellobusiness@edfenergy.com.

What is the Smart Export Guarantee for small businesses?

EDF Energy is a Mandatory SEG Licensee

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) is a licensee requirement to offer an export tariff to eligible generators. This tariff is for you where you have installed one of the below technologies with capacity up to 5MW or up to 50kW for Micro-CHP:

  • solar photovoltaic (solar PV)
  • wind
  • micro combined heat and power (CHP)
  • hydro
  • anaerobic digestion (AD)

Your business premise will also need a smart meter or half-hourly electricity meter and must not already receive payments under the Feed In Tariff (FIT) Scheme or already receive SEG payments from another SEG licensee.

If you're a business and your installation is larger than the limits set for SEG, please check our Power Purchase Agreement for large businesses.

FAQs about our smart export tariffs for your small business

Our EDF Export Variable Value and EDF Export Variable tariffs are variably-priced, this means the price may go up or down.

If we plan to change the price of your exported electricity, we’ll contact you in writing at least  5 days before to let you know. There is no exit fee for our variable tariffs.

We will send you a read reminder every quarter, once received you can email it to hellobusiness@edfenergy.com.

You’ll be paid based on the tariff unit rate multiplied by the eligible electricity that’s exported to the grid. We aim to make a payment via bank transfer or cheque within 28 days of receiving your meter reading.

The way you identify the export meter reading will depend on the type of meter you have.

  • If you have a smart meter, the export reading will be shown on the smart meter itself. To see the reading you'll need to press the button(s) on your smart meter and scroll through the various menus on the meter display. This will all depend on the type of smart meter you have installed.
  • If you have a separate export meter, your meter reading will be the number shown on the main display of the meter. You may need to press a button for it to be displayed or illuminated.

Once you have located the reading, take a photo of your reading and send this to hellobusiness@edfenergy.com.

If there is an eligible renewable energy installation linked to the battery storage, any electricity fed into the grid will be eligible for SEG payments.

There is no limit of how much electricity can be exported to the grid, but it can’t be more than the amount of renewable energy your system can generate. We may write to you to confirm your export reading if it appears to be greater than the amount your system can generate.

Unfortunately, you will not be able to apply for more than one export scheme for the same installation.

If you're currently receiving FiT payments, you can opt out of receiving export payments under the FiT scheme and sign-up for the SEG tariff instead.

Please note once you opt out your FiT export, you cannot opt back in for 12 months. You will also not be able to return to Deem export payments and will be paid based on metered export moving forward.

You'll need to take an export reading from your meter on the day that you move out of your property. You can take a photo of the reading and email us at hellobusiness@edfenergy.com or call us on 0330 912 9959(1).

If you are unable to send us the reading you have taken straight away, don’t worry. Just send it to us as soon as you can.

If you've moved into a new business premise and you wish to receive SEG payments as a new owner, you'll need to sign up to a new SEG tariff with us, or with another SEG licensee.
