Can I switch supplier when I have a smart Pay As You Go meter?

You can switch to another supplier in the normal way – and you can usually carry on with Pay As You Go.

Is there a chance my smart meter won't work when I switch?

Some smart meters can't work in 'smart' mode when you switch supplier – either because of the make and model, or because of the way it's been set up.

So there's a small chance your smart meter will only work as a basic meter when you switch, which would mean:

  • You won't be able to pay as you go – you'll pay by Direct Debit or get a bill to pay each month instead
  • You'll need to give your own meter readings – so your new supplier will ask you for an opening meter reading

You'll find out if your meter can carry on working as a smart meter when your switch is complete.

What happens when I switch from EDF to another supplier?

We'll switch your smart meter to credit mode just before you switch. This will help you avoid getting disconnected when your supply switches to your new supplier.

Can I switch if I have debt on my meter?

If you're switching to EDF, we'll ask your old supplier to transfer your debt over to us (up to £500). If they agree, we'll take a small weekly payment from your meter towards paying off that debt when you switch.

What happens to any credit on my meter when I switch supplier?

You should ask your old supplier for a refund for any leftover credit when you switch to EDF. Your balance starts at £0 when you switch over to us.
