Smart meter installations

We've installed over 3 million smart meters across the UK. Our guide will help you prepare for your smart meter installation and understand what to expect on the day.

How to prepare for your smart meter installation

1: Make sure you're in

Someone who is at least 18 years of age must be there during the installation. This takes about an hour for each meter.

2: Get access to your meter

We need to be able to get to your meters easily. Make sure you have the key to access it if it's located in a cupboard or in a locked room.

3: Keep your pets away

Make sure your pets are in another room during the installation so they won't be disturbed.

4: Plan ahead

Your power may need to be shut down for up to an hour per meter, and you should consider shutting down any sensitive equipment.

What to expect on the day of your smart meter installation

  • The engineer will arrive anytime during your slot, and we'll aim to call 30 minutes before to confirm it's safe to enter your home.
  • The engineer will need to come into your home to complete safety checks, even if your meter is outside. If anyone in your home develops coronavirus symptoms before, or on the day of the appointment, please reschedule for a later date.
  • We'll need easy access to the meter; if the meter is in a communal cupboard or locked room, please make sure you have the key to let us in. Check the area is clear from obstruction and there is enough space for our engineer to work.
  • It takes about an hour to install each meter, and your power and gas will need to be switched off for each install. In some circumstances, it could take longer.

Once your smart meter is installed

After installing your smart meter, our installer will get you connected to your new in-home display (IHD). They'll be able to give you some useful advice on how to get the best out of your new smart meter and in-home display.
