Common questions on solar batteries and panels
How do solar panels work?
Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels contain layers of semiconducting materials. Our panels use silicon.
The panels absorb sunlight and turn it into electricity. An inverter then changes the electricity from direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC).
You can use this electricity to power your household appliances, charge your battery, or export the excess to the grid.
Do solar panels still work on cloudy days?
Yes. Solar panels use daylight, not heat, to generate electricity. They produce the most power in direct sunshine, but they still work on cloudy or overcast days by using indirect light. They can also work very efficiently on bright, cold winter days, as cooler temperatures help electricity flow through the panels.
Do I need planning permission?
In most cases, you won’t need planning permission. UK rules usually allow you to install solar panels on your home without it. Check with your local planning office if your home is listed, is in a conservation area, or has a flat roof where the panels would need bulky mounting frames.
How long does an installation take?
Our installers will do their best to finish within the timeframe we agreed with you, usually within a day. However, things like the weather may cause delays, so we can’t guarantee they’ll finish by then. If the team needs more time to complete the installation to Contact Solar’s high standards, they’ll get in touch with an update.
Where can I install the Sunsynk Elite battery?
You can install the Sunsynk Elite battery outdoors.
Batteries can potentially be installed on:
- External property walls
- Suitable fences/fence posts
- Detached garages
- Freestanding walls
Any locations away from your home must be connected by protected cabling
