Did you have enough credit on your meter to cover your daily standing charges ?
You pay your daily standing charges from the credit on your meter even when you're not using gas. If you run out of credit when you're away, you'll go into debt.

Are you on an instalment plan?
If you were away for more than a week, you'll have gone into debt because you've missed your weekly instalment payments.

You have to top up your meter at least once a week to tell your meter to take your instalment payment, even if you have credit on your meter.
