How to read a gas smart meter that has a red 'A' and black 'B' button under its screen

About your smart meter reading

Normally, a smart meter sends us your gas readings automatically. So please only give us a reading if we've asked you to do this.

If we've asked you for a reading, please take it from the meter itself – not your in-home display. Your meter is usually on a wall or board; your in-home display either plugs into a socket or runs on batteries.

It looks like you have a have a Landis and Gyr (SMETS1) meter. Follow these simple steps to read this type of smart gas meter:

  1. Press the red 'A' button to wake the screen
  2. Press the red 'A' button several times again until you see ‘METER INDEX
  3. Write down the numbers you see (they'll be in front of 'M3') – this is your reading

Tips to read your meter

When you're reading your gas meter, ignore any zeros at the front of the number – and ignore any numbers after the decimal point (the dot).
