Celebrating IWD 2022 - Meet Angeliki

We interviewed Angeliki Loukatou as part of this year's International Women's Day (IWD). This year's theme is 'Break the Bias.'

Talk about your work experience so far

I am a Senior Research Engineer in the Smart Customers team at the R&D UK Centre. I joined the company in June 2020 as a Research Engineer and was promoted to Senior Research Engineer in December 2021. My main areas of expertise include optimal valuation of energy storage co-located with renewables, as well as electricity price forecasting. Prior to this, I was working as a modelling analyst at Energy Systems Catapult, specialising in the areas of energy storage and second-life batteries. I also hold a PhD from the Centre for Doctoral Training in Power Networks, at the University of Manchester, in the area of business models for wind farms co-located with battery storage.

From your experience, what advice would you give to others regarding women having careers in the engineering / energy sector?

Going towards a Net Zero world involves many opportunities and challenges. Be attracted by them and when you get very tired, learn to rest but never quit. Stay resilient, positive and hopeful.

Why is IWD important to you?

IWD is very important to me because it provides us with a chance to raise awareness inside and outside the business. Raising awareness about various inclusion and diversity matters is vital, and role models are essential to achieve that since you cannot be what you cannot see.

What does this year’s theme #BreaktheBias mean to you?

#Breakthebias is very important to me because being a power systems engineer provides me with a chance to show that female engineers can thrive in the engineering world and lead by example. In addition, I am very honoured to serve as the Chair of the IEEE Women in Power Network at the UK and Ireland, leading a team of exceptional female engineers, all of us aiming at raising awareness and mentoring younger female engineers towards their route to leadership roles.

What is your role within the Women’s Network?

I am the Digital Lead of EDF’s Women Network, aiming at promoting successful topics for discussion across the business, alongside maintaining our website and promoting talks and events from exceptional female employees across the business. I also help with the bi-monthly newsletter, writing articles about many female success stories, and share them across the various EDF business units.
