What is it?

ECO (Energy Company Obligation) is a government scheme that gives people subsidised energy efficiency improvements for their home. Its main aim is to help people keep warm, save energy and lower their energy bills. By insulating our customers’ homes and providing more efficient ways of heating, we’re helping to cut the amount of energy you use.

There are three improvements available:

Loft insulation

Loft insulation

  • By insulating your loft, you can reduce the amount of heat lost and save money on your heating bills
  • Loft insulation is quick to install and requires only minimal disruption
  • No maintenance once installed
Cavity Wall

Cavity wall insulation:

  • If your home was built after 1920, it’s likely to have cavity walls
  • By insulating this gap, you can reduce the amount of heat lost and save money off your heating bills
  • Cavity wall insulation is quick to install

Am I eligible for Energy Company Obligation scheme with EDF Energy?

  1. You need to be a current EDF Energy customer and supplied by us for your electricity and/or gas. If you’re not supplied by us at the moment but would like to switch, give us a call on 0800 404 9084*. We aren't the only supplier to offer ECO measures, so if you’re not with us it’s worth checking with the Energy Saving Advice Service on 0300 123 1234 (for England), 0808 808 2282 (for Scotland) or 0800 512 012 (for Wales) 
  2. You must either own (and live in) your home or be a private tenant(1)
  3. Your home must be considered suitable for loft or cavity wall insulation if you’d like these improvements(2) 
  4. For a subsidised replacement A-rated gas boiler(3), your current boiler must be broken or running inefficiently and someone in your household must receive one of the four qualifying benefits or benefit combinations. Check the eligibility criteria below to see if you qualify. Please also have details of your boiler's make and model when you call us.(4)

Eligibility criteria for a replacement gas boiler

To qualify for a replacement A-rated gas boiler, your current boiler must be broken or running inefficiently plus someone in your household must receive one of the following four qualifying benefits:

How do I apply?

The first thing to do is call us on 0800 404 9084. We’ll run through the eligibility criteria (above) to check you qualify. If you qualify, we’ll set up a free, no obligation home assessment with one of our qualified installers. They’ll visit to check your house is suitable. It'll be around four weeks after you first get in touch with us.

What happens at the assessment?

The installation company will take some measurements and photos. The assessment will take around two to three hours, depending on the type of property you live in. You might need to show them some paperwork (like a tenancy agreement or proof of benefits). They’ll also need to do a technical survey – they’ll either do this on the same day as the assessment, or make an appointment with you to come back another day.

The installer will then tell you which improvements will be best for you. There might be some extra costs you need to pay but they’ll let you know what these are before they start the work.

Gas replacement boilers

  • A highly efficient gas condensing boiler installed by our appointed contractor 
  • Boiler replacement in the same location connecting to existing pipe work and controls
  • Electrical works associated with boiler installation
  • Carbon monoxide detector
  • One year minimum warranty on parts and labour

Loft insulation

  • Installation of mineral wool insulation in your loft
  • Insulation of cold water tank and pipes in loft space

Cavity wall insulation

  • Installation of approved cavity wall material in external walls
  • 25 year CIGA guarantee

What’s not included

You can add some of these if you’re happy to pay for them

Gas replacement boilers

  • Non standard boilers, water cylinder replacement or upgrades
  • Replacement of any damaged parts or requested provision of new ones
  • Any additional or new pipe runs caused by boiler location changes or blockages
  • Any building or cosmetic works, or asbestos removal
  • We can’t replace back or floorstanding boilers and do not carry out boiler repairs or emergency boiler replacements

Loft insulation

  • Additional loft vents 
  • We cannot insulate rooms in the roof

Cavity wall insulation

  • We cannot provide insulation to unsuitable properties – this may be due to exposure conditions, cavity wall condition or narrow cavities.

Getting your improvements installed

As long as you’re happy to go ahead, the installer will book a date for the work – usually around four to five weeks after your technical survey. You’ll need to sign a contract with them for this.

Once the work’s finished, they’ll send your warranty and maintenance documents in the next two to three weeks.
