How to join our next Sunday Saver challenge

How does it work?

Everyone who signs up for the challenge will get a target to shift some of their electricity usage away from peak hours (usually 4pm to 7pm)(2). The more you shift during the week, the more free electricity you can earn. For example, if you shift 50% of your peak usage, you can earn up to 16 free hours to use the following Sunday.

To join, visit Energy Hub in your MyAccount monthly and sign up for the challenge. If you miss the sign-up deadline, don’t worry; we can send you an alert when the next challenge sign-up period opens. Request a Sunday Saver reminder.

To join, make sure you have a smart meter that sends readings every 30 minutes or set it up for 30-minute reads.

We would definitely take part again

"We found the Sunday Saver challenge trial really simple. We managed to reduce our electricity by ensuring we didn't do any clothes washing, use the dishwasher or charge a car between 4–7pm. With the free hours we earned on Sundays, it’s been great to do as much as possible such as washing and charging things around the house."

Michael and Julie Parker earned 192 hours of free electricity on our Sunday Saver trial

About your free electricity

We're doing everything we can to help our customers save cash and carbon.

That's why we're offering you free electricity as part of our Sunday Saver challenge. We want to encourage you to shift your electricity usage away from peak hours during the week (usually 4pm to 7pm).

And by taking some of the strain off the electricity grid at peak times, we're all helping Britain move towards net zero.

Are you ready for the challenge? Together, we can help create a cleaner, more sustainable national grid.

You should be able to earn free electricity quite easily by making small changes to your energy habits.

For instance, everyone in the house can charge up their devices outside of peak times; you can put the dishwasher on in the morning; or do a bit of batch cooking at the weekend.

Go to Energy Hub in MyAccount to see when you use most electricity. Here, you can also keep track of your carbon savings and free electricity.

We know changing habits can be tricky, but we hope you're up for the challenge!

You can earn up to 16 hours of free electricity each week and you can use your free electricity during the time periods below.

You can keep track of how much free electricity you've earned each week in Energy Hub – and which Sunday you can use it.

The time you can use your free electricity on the Sunday depends on the amount of free electricity you've earned (see How much free electricity can I earn?).

You won't need to do anything different to get your free electricity, as we just add a credit to your account. Here's how we work it out:

  • Your meter readings tell us how many killowatt hours (kWh) of electricity you've used during your free hours on each Sunday of the monthly challenge

  • We then multiply the total kWhs used during your free hours by your unit rate to work out how much this electricity would have cost

  • We add a credit for this amount to your account after the final free electricity Sunday takes place

  • This credit will reduce your next electricity bill – or we’ll add it to your smart PAYG meter after the final free electricity Sunday

So far, customers have earned a total of 6,238,028 free electricity hours, worth £ 1.5 million.(3)

What you need to take part

You can sign up to our Sunday Saver challenge if:

  • You're an EDF residential customer living in England, Scotland or Wales (aged 18 or over)
  • You have a smart electricity meter that's sending us readings every 30 minutes
  • We've had enough electricity meter readings from your smart meter in the run-up to the challenge
  • We have your mobile phone number, so we can send you messages on how you're getting on and let you know when the next challenge is
  • You have one electricity supply point (also known as your Meter Point Administration Number or MPAN)
  • Your tariff has one or two electricity rates

We need readings from your smart meter every 30 minutes to see how much electricity you use during peak and off-peak hours.

Before each monthly challenge starts, we'll need enough meter readings from the previous month to set your next target.

Once the monthly challenge has started, your meter readings will show us how much electricity you've shifted away from peak hours. We can then tell you how much free electricity you've earned.

Don't have a smart meter yet? Book your smart meter installation in MyAccount.

Half-hourly readings let us see exactly how much electricity you're using during peak and off-peak hours. This allows us to set your target for each month's challenge, keep track of your progress, and tell you how much free electricity you've earned.

Not on 30-minute readings yet? Go to Smart meter data preferences in MyAccount and select 'Every 30 minutes' for your meter readings.

We'll send you various Sunday Saver texts or WhatsApp messages to:

  • Keep you up to date with your progress on the current challenge
  • Tell you how much free electricity you've earned, and when you'll get it
  • Let you know when to sign up to the next challenge

Not sure your mobile number is up to date? Go to My Details in MyAccount to add your mobile number.

How the challenge works

Any new monthly challenge will start on the first Monday of the month. You'll need to go to Energy Hub just before each challenge starts to sign up to the new challenge.

If you arrive at Energy Hub and see you've missed the cut-off time, you can ask us to send you a reminder to make sure you don't miss out on the next challenge.

For each challenge, we'll set you a target, based on your average peak electricity consumed in the month before you joined your first challenge. We apply weather corrections so the target will change slightly each month.

We recalculate your target if there's a pause in participation. This will be because:

  •  You took a break from participating
  •  You were ineligible for a period
  •  We paused the challenge

Peak times are Monday to Friday, usually between the hours of 4pm and 7pm.

Peak electricity demand during the week (Monday to Friday) is usually from 4 pm to 7 pm. If this changes, we'll let you know in the Sunday Saver section of Energy Hub in MyAccount.

You can sign up to the Sunday Saver challenge with each property as long as you have a different EDF account number for each property.

You don't actually need to opt-out. You can just choose not to sign up the next month's challenge.

You can always carry on using your electricity as normal for any month you've already signed up to. You won't get penalised if you don't hit your targets.

Get a shift on! Tips to shift your electricity usage

Small changes to our daily habits can make a big difference to our carbon impact. By being mindful of our daily actions, we can make positive changes to help create a greener, more sustainable grid.

Here are a few tips to get you thinking about how you can shift your electricity usage away from peak hours during the week (usually 4pm to 7pm):

  • Put your dishwasher on later in the evening after 7pm and make sure the programme's finished before you go to bed.  Or put it on at breakfast time to avoid peak time – and make sure it's full before it goes on

  • Unplug your devices and chargers from 4 pm to 7 pm – use your battery power instead, and remember they still use electricity on standby

  • Put aside the gaming consoles – and try something new as a family

  • Batch cook at the weekend to save energy and time – just reheat during the week

  • Avoid using the washing machine and tumble dryer at peak times – hang clothes outside if you can

  • Charge your electric car outside of peak times – check out the low off-peak rates you can get with our exclusive EV tariffs
