Market-wide Half Hourly Settlement (MHHS): This is the future
If you’ve been hearing about Market-wide Half Hourly Settlement (MHHS) and wondering what it’s all about, then you’re in the right place. MHHS is arguably the biggest overhaul to the UK energy market in decades, designed to bring clarity, fairness and smarter energy use to everyone. Here’s how it works…
What is MHHS?
Market-wide Half Hourly Settlement (or MHHS) is a national programme led by Ofgem that shifts all electricity settlement from estimates and periodic readings to actual half hourly data extracted remotely from compatible meters.
Instead of relying on old school estimations and manual readings, energy suppliers will get detailed and correct data to settle every meter point accurately, meaning bills that reflect what you used, when you used it.
You'll gain far more transparent statements, since we no longer have to use informed guesswork for certain readings. It makes things fairer, simpler and easier.
What’s in it for you
More accuracy and smart energy choices
Half hourly data takes the guess-the-usage game off the table. Small businesses benefit from more accurate billing and better insight into how and when they consume electricity.
With richer data, small businesses can now identify wasted energy, shift usage to cheaper periods and make those impactful changes that save cash. There’s a variety of tariffs that we offer at EDF, some of which are made for businesses with certain operation times, so the more info you have about when your peak energy use is, the better choices you can make on your tariff.
A big boost toward Net Zero
By unlocking time of use tariffs and flexible energy products, MHHS supports the UK’s broader transition to smarter, greener electricity. EDF is currently the biggest supplier of green energy in the UK, with an ambition to reaching Net Zero by 2050.
The implementation of MHHS changes will help you access innovative tariffs and flexibility schemes that will get you to Net Zero with us.
What you need to do
Key dates to be aware of:
MHHS is already being rolled out across the country, so here are the major milestones to keep locked in:
September 2025: This is when the industry began the official ‘migration’ process to MHHS, meaning meter code changes and system readiness going live.
May 2026-April 2027: All EDF customers will be migrated to the MHHS model within this timeframe. This will include reminders to get meters upgraded if required.
May 2027: All eligible meters must be able to settle billing via half hourly data, as per Ofgem guidelines.
July 2027: Ofgem’s target date for full completion of nationwide transfer to MHHS.
In other words, this is happening now - and your business will be part of it soon (if it isn’t already).
Why your meter type matters
Under MHHS, meter type becomes a big deal. Because it requires real half hourly data, it means that out-dated legacy meters won’t cut it. We’re here to help get an appointment for meter upgrades at no extra charge, so you can make that transition to MHHS sooner rather than later and make your business energy future-proof.
Here’s what we recommend to get yourself prepared for this big change in energy supply:
Get your current meters audited. If they won’t cut it for MHHS, they’ll need upgrading...
Visit our meter page to find out more info on smart and AMR meters and – if you need to, get your meter upgrade booked!
Keep an eye on emerging EDF tariffs and flexibility products. We update our tariffs monthly, giving our customers choice and variety to suit your small business needs.
Embrace the data! With a smart meter, you can access your usage through Energy Hub on your MyAccount, so you can track that accurate half-hourly data and make useful business changes accordingly. It’s about to make your life a whole lot easier!
MHHS is not just compliance. It’s an upgrade to how your business understands and manages energy. It’s one of those rare industry reforms that promises to make things better, with clearer data, smarter tariffs, greener outcomes and fairer bills. With the right prep, your business can join the slipstream into a more efficient, more transparent future of energy use.
If your meters aren’t ready yet, now’s the perfect time to get ahead of the game. Your future energy bills (and your finance team) will thank you, so click here to get on board!
