Help combat climate change and generate free energy – choose EDF Energy Microgeneration and harness the power of nature to generate free green electricity for your home.

Doing our bit and helping you do yours

We’ve made a commitment to cut carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from our business and we want to help our customers do the same. Home electricity generation or ‘Microgeneration’ is a great way to provide greener energy for your home.

Microgeneration made easy

It’s a long word, but a relatively simple process. For example, install a small wind turbine on the roof of your house; it converts those gentle breezes and occasional gales into electricity that tops up your mains supply.

We’ll provide a free home assessment to tell you if your home’s suitable.

Why choose Microgeneration?

- Cleaner energy means lower C02 emissions – good for you, good for the planet
- The more energy you generate yourself – the less you buy from us

Installing a wind turbine to generate free electricity at home may not be as complicated or expensive as you’d imagine – and we’ll help you every step of the way.

Microgeneration made easy

One way to generate free green energy at home is to install a wind turbine – a simple device that turns those gentle breezes and occasional gales into electricity and synchronises with your mains supply. Our free no-obligation home assessment will tell you if your home’s ready for wind power.

Your free home assessment

One of our trained assessors will evaluate the structural suitability of your home and your local wind profile. Some buildings and materials can’t support the weight of a turbine, so if you have any of the following at home, a wind turbine probably won’t work for you:

  • Wooden building walls or flat wooden roofs
  • Light steel structures
  • Calcium silicate bricks or autoclave aerated concrete bricks
  • Friable mortar or sand lime mortar

Planning permission

You should contact your local Planning Department to ask if you need planning permission to install a wind turbine at home. We suggest you wait until after your free home assessment before applying for planning permission to make sure it’s worth doing. If you do apply, we’ll provide all the information you need to include about the site of your wind turbine in the application.

Installing your wind turbine

Installing your wind turbine should take no more than 4 hours – assuming there are no unforeseen complications. We have to choose the location carefully to maximise the power of the wind to make sure you generate as much free clean energy as possible.

Your guarantee

Your wind turbine comes with a 2 year warranty, subject to safe and reasonable operation.

Imagine harnessing the power of the wind to generate free electricity for your home – and do your bit to help combat climate change. With our Microgeneration solution you can do both.

How wind turbines work

Wind turbines convert the energy in the wind into electricity. Wind turbines synchronise this free, clean energy with the mains supply in your home – using a revolutionary design to make sure your green electricity takes priority over energy you buy from us.

Is your home ready for wind power?

The more wind you have, the more power you can generate – so living in a windy area helps. Our free home assessment will tell you if your home’s ready for wind power.

There are two ways of wind turbine:

  • Mast mounted – free standing and located near the building(s) that will be using the electricity.
  • Roof mounted – can be installed on house roofs and other buildings.

What happens if you choose a home wind turbine?

The process is pretty straightforward:

  • One of our trained assessors will evaluate the structural suitability of your home and your local wind profile
  • Assuming your home’s suitable for Microgeneration you can order and pay for your wind turbine
  • You’ll need to contact your local Planning Department to see if you need permission to install your wind turbine, before we agree an installation date that suits you – don’t worry if you can’t get permission, we’ll refund your original payment in full
  • We’ll install your wind turbine – the whole process shouldn’t take more than about 4 hours
  • You’ll start generating free, clean energy the moment the wind blows

Choose Microgeneration and you could reduce your energy bills by generating clean free energy for your home and selling electricity back to us through an EDF Energy Power Purchase Agreement.

How it works

We can offer you two ‘buy back’ energy options:

  1. Metered – if you’re a residential customer with an appropriate OFGEM accredited generation meter we’ll pay you every unit of electricity generated through your Microgeneration system*
  2. Un-metered – we’ll pay you £10 per KW of installed load a year

Are you eligible for a Power Purchase Agreement?

To qualify for a Power Purchase Agreement you must meet the following criteria:

  • You are an EDF Energy electricity supply customer
  • You have an Ofgem approved generation meter installed at your property.
  • You have grid connection approval from your local Distribution Network Operator – we can arrange this for you when we install your Microgeneration system

If you would like to take part in the EDF Energy Power Purchase Agreement, or to find out more - Call our Green Energy Team free on 0800 051 1905†.

*The price we pay customers for their electricity varies according to the type of technology and the size of the installation.
