What costs make up your business energy tariffs?

There are a lot of different costs that go into calculating the tariffs we set. Find out what they are.

These are what you pay for the energy bought to supply your business.

As a supplier we buy energy from electricity generators and gas producers on the wholesale market - these prices are changeable depending on the prices of global commodities like gas, oil, coal and increasingly renewable fuels.  So that we can try and protect you against sudden price changes, we forecast your usage and use this to purchase your electricity for your future energy requirements.

As Britain’s biggest generator of zero carbon electricity, we’re helping build Britain’s own wind, nuclear and solar energy supply to reduce reliance on energy imports and help prevent future price rises. Alongside renewables, we operate low carbon nuclear power stations, find out more.

Costs included in your invoices:

  • Unit rates: The unit price is the rate charged per unit or kilowatt hour (kWh) of electricity or gas you use.
  • Standing charges:  a fixed cost that is included in each electricity and gas invoice, regardless of whether energy is used on that day. The charge covers the cost to maintain the energy supply network, take meter readings, and support some government social and environmental schemes. See our blog on standing charges
