Save money and upgrade your home with the ECO4 scheme

The ECO4 scheme is a government initiative that offers financial assistance for energy-efficient upgrades to households in Great Britain. Homeowners with a low EPC rating can apply for a package of energy-saving measures and heating improvements through the ECO4 scheme. It's worth noting that the scheme is not restricted to boiler upgrades or replacements.

What is the ECO4 Scheme?

ECO4 is the fourth phase of the Government’s Energy Company Obligation. It started in August 2022 and it's due to continue until 31 March 2026.

The ECO4 Scheme aims to provide free energy-saving measures for vulnerable households to improve the efficiency and heating of their home.

Three steps to a more energy efficient home with the ECO4 scheme

Step 1

Fill out the form, and within two working days, a member of our EDF Heat Pumps team will reach out to you.(2)

Step 2

EDF Heat Pumps will coordinate with other installers to handle your energy efficiency upgrades.

Step 3

Lead times may vary for different installers, but don’t worry - you’ll receive regular updates, and it won’t be long before your home is fully transformed!

Here are some of the measures which will make up a package under ECO4

Upgrade your electric heating system

Through ECO4 you can make the switch to low carbon heating with an air source heat pump. They're 300% more efficient than gas boilers and can lower your carbon footprint by around 13% a year, that's roughly a return flight from London to Perth!(3)

Not ready for a heat pump? You can also upgrade your existing electric heating system with a more energy-efficient solution such as adding electric and storage heaters. New models of storage heaters and electric radiators include energy efficiency features such as;

  • Smart controls help you only heat the rooms you want
  • A highly accurate thermostat, 7-day times for 24-hour control
  • Energy-saving technologies such as 'open window detection' and 'adaptive start'

Insulate your home

Did you know that a typical home without insulation can lose 33% of its heat through its walls and 25% through the roof?

Insulating your home properly can improve keeping the heat in and reduce heat loss.

Well-insulated homes are much better for your health too. There is no question that living in a cold home can cause health issues, and heighten pre-existing ones. Insulating your home to the latest guidance also means that you can prevent damp, which can cause mould and mildew.

Adding insulation to your loft, walls and floor will help you keep your home warm, wasting less energy and lowering your home's carbon emissions.

FAQs about the ECO4 Scheme

The ECO scheme has been designed by the government to improve the most energy-inefficient properties. The scheme requires that the fabric of a property (walls, floors and roofs) are considered before replacing a heating system.

If all insulation work has been done, it may be possible to upgrade your heating system, but further scheme restrictions may apply.

An upgrade would typically be;

  • Upgrading from electric room heaters  to an efficient air source heat pump
  • Upgrading from inefficient electric storage heaters to an efficient air source heat pump

In order to be eligible for the ECO scheme, your property must meet the minimum EPC band improvement. The measures identified by the installer will meet this requirement and must be installed to be eligible for the scheme.

The ECO scheme is not a grant scheme. Payments are made directly to the installer based on the work completed in your home. EDF only uses installers that meet the accreditation requirements set by the government.

This means that all the work carried out will be to a high standard, making sure the improvements help you make your home more efficient for the long term.

Proper airflow is essential when insulating a property, so ventilation measures may need to be installed. We’ll cover the cost of this.

Please head to our boiler section, where you can order a new boiler.
