Aced it! Celebrating our award-winning apprentice Anna

By Hinkley Point C media team | Posted December 01, 2022

Congratulations to Anna Gates, Civil Engineering Degree Apprentice, who clinched the Apprentice of the Year accolade at the 2022 Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE) South West Civil Engineering Awards.

The prestigious annual awards celebrate innovation and excellence, and showcase the collective and individual achievements of civil engineers and civil engineering in the region. Anna was recognised for the fantastic development she’s made working on the Project.

After beginning her apprenticeship at HPC in 2019, Anna has since honed her knowledge in technical and engineering fundamentals, while also gaining confidence thanks to an encouraging and supportive team around her.

Gaining valuable insights
Anna said: “I’ve developed an understanding of structures and gained so much valuable insight on being a good engineer who adheres to our Code of Conduct. In addition, I’ve learned about the importance of health and safety, as well as looking after the environment and how to be a good team member.”

She was initially nominated for the award by her manager, James Fahy, Construction Superintendent, before she was shortlisted and interviewed by a panel of judges. Anna admitted she was shocked at winning the award, but expressed her gratitude towards her fellow team members for the support they’ve provided over the years.

Supportive team members
She added: “It was such a pleasure to be able to attend the event and I was delighted when I found out that I’d won the award.

“I’d like to say a big ‘thank you’ to the Nuclear Skills Alliance Early Careers team for their support. I’m also really grateful to the Geotechnical team, which has been so encouraging and provided such positive energy. When I don’t have confidence in myself, my fellow team members give me the boost I need to be able to overcome day-to-day challenges, so they were very happy for me.”

Congratulations again Anna! We look forward to seeing what the future holds for our star apprentice.
