Visitor Centre heads to 34,000 visitors

PUPILS from Austin Friars School, Carlisle, were treated to cake and Zingy goodies as they became the 30,000th people through the doors of Heysham power stations’ Visitor Centre.

The centre has now seen more than 33,500 visitors since it opened and is already planning a number of events for 2019

The centre opened in 2013 and attracts visitors from across the north west. They spend time in the Visitor Centre’s exhibition area, the classroom and then head out on to Heysham 2 to see the station’s turbine hall and reactor building.

Sarah Marshall, visitor centre co-ordinator, said: “We have great links with our local school, colleges and universities and they are now regular visitors to the centre.

“But we are seeing more and more schools travelling to centre as they get to know what a great day out it is for their pupils who get a chance to see what we do here at the power stations.”

The pupils from Austin Friars school travelled down from Cumbria to see Heysham 2 and were surprised to be given cake to mark the milestone.

Becky Mitchell, a teacher from Austin Friars, said: “The day was thoroughly enjoyed by both pupils and staff. We thank staff at Heysham Power Station for making it such an enjoyable and memorable experience.”
