DODONA, DUAL-DOPPLER SCANNING LiDAR TECHNOLOGY

Posted November 10, 2025

Project DODONA is a collaborative research project centred around Dual-Doppler scanning LiDAR (DD LiDAR) technology of offshore wind farm operations and maintenance. The installation phase has just started.DD LiDAR is a highly innovative remote sensing technology used to measure atmospheric wind conditions. Commercial uptake has been concentrated in Asian markets to date and rarely used in commercial applications. It offers several key benefits versus alternative LiDAR technologies, notably significantly greater range (10+ km) and vast scan customisability. Due to its high cost, EDF was yet to trial DD LiDAR technology in-house until now.
A team project
EDF UK R&D are leading this £1.1M project comprising of two other UK partners and three German companies. We secured Innovate UK funding through a competitive grant process designed to foster bilateral partnerships between UK and German organisations. R&D Renewables has been supporting the measurement campaign design and R&D Operations has been managing the project.

The campaign at EDF’s Blyth Offshore Demonstrator wind farm will run for six months, with several subsequent work packages planned to exploit the data collected. The project will offer lots of valuable research outputs related to measurement uncertainty, the novel application to operations and maintenance, and to how wind measurement technologies compare.
