Moving into new business premises? Set up your EDF energy account in 3 Steps

By Stacey - Small Business Marketing Team | Posted January 07, 2025

Moving into new business premises is an exciting step for any business, but getting your energy supply sorted can feel daunting. Don’t worry, we’re here to make it effortless, efficient, and stress-free. With just a few steps, you’ll have your energy account set up and your business powered in no time, allowing you to focus on growing your small business.

Whether you’re looking for business energy tariffs, or guidance on energy efficiency, we’ve got everything you need to hit the ground running and continue to grow. Here’s how to get started.

Step 1: Take a meter reading

One of the first things to do when you take responsibility for your new premises is to record the meter reading. This ensures your first bill is accurate and only includes energy used after you’ve moved in.

If the premises already have a smart meter, this step is even easier – your readings will be sent automatically to EDF, saving you time and hassle.

Step 2: Gather your documents

We’ll need a few documents to set up your account. The documents we need depend on whether you’re moving into new premises or moving out of old ones.

Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • If you’re moving in:
    • One legal document - lease agreement or completion statement
    • Current photo of your meter
  • If you’re moving out:
    • One legal document - surrender of lease or completion statement
    • Current photo of your meter

Step 3: Email us

Once you’ve gathered the required documents, email them to bm@edfenergy.com. We’ll process your request and get back to you with confirmation within 10 working days

How to avoid delays

Don’t let small details hold up your energy account setup. Follow these tips to ensure a smooth process:

1. Settle outstanding balances tied to the property

Make sure any unpaid bills from the previous tenant or owner are cleared. This avoids unnecessary complications and ensures a fresh start for your account. You can do this by asking the previous occupant, landlord or property manager for proof of final payment.

2. Match legal documents to your move-in date

Make sure the dates on your lease agreement or other legal documents align with the day you take responsibility for the premises. Inaccurate dates can cause processing delays.

3. Take clear photos of your meter

Take a photo of your meter readings on the day you move in. This means you won’t be charged for energy you didn’t use and your bills will be accurate from the get-go.

4. Submit fully signed documents in PDF format

Double-check that all the documents you send are signed and saved as PDFs. This helps us process your account efficiently.

5. Keep copies of all documents

Save copies of everything you submit for your records. This gives you peace of mind and a reference in case you need them again during the moving-in process.
