Sunday roast confessions: the good, the bad and the ketchup

Posted December 10, 2024

Roast dinner season is in full swing and debates about what belongs on the plate are heating up. Research by EDF, marking our Sunday Saver challenge, found that Brits are divided on what should be served.

What’s really on your plate?

According to the survey, the usual suspects such as potatoes (78%), gravy (74%), Yorkshire pudding (67%), carrots (65%), and roast beef (57%) make up the lion's share of a Sunday roast, alongside other popular items such as stuffing (47%), peas (45%), mashed potatoes (41%).

However, some people like to get creative with their side dishes. Mushrooms and ketchup are surprise additions to 11% of people's roasts, while garlic bread, eggs, and bread and butter make it on to 1 in 10 plates. Other unusual sides include mayonnaise (8%), baked beans (8%), pickle (7%), and black pudding (5%).
