Press Release: Golf day raises over £9,000 in memory of Matt Purdie

Freinds and colleagues of a former Hinkley Point C project worker teed off in his memory and raised more than £9,000 for local cancer support charity SURE, the Somerset Unit for Radiotherapy Equipment, and national cancer charity Marie Curie.

A total of 111 golfers took to the greens at Taunton and Pickeridge Golf Club for a charity golf day in memory of Matt Purdie who died last year after a short battle with cancer.

Matt was EDF Energy’s environmental and sustainability lead on the Hinkley Point C project, and received some of his treatment at the Beacon Centre at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton, which is supported by SURE.

Teams of four battled it out in the bunkers and made sure they were on par in a bid to avoid a wooden spoon and to try and claim the top honours on the day. The winners were a team from contractors Cape.

Non-golfers also gave their support by baking cakes to sell during the event, taking photographs, acting as stewards and running an auction and raffle at the evening prize-giving.

Nigel Cann, programme and construction delivery director, said: “Matt was a popular member of the team at Hinkley Point C and as he was passionate about sport and had played in our previous golf day this seemed like a fitting tribute to him.

“I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who supported the event, from baking cakes to donating prizes for the raffle and auction.

“The day was a huge success and raised many thousands of pounds for SURE and Marie Curie in his memory.”

Matt lived in Bridgwater and was married with two children.
